A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Can you laugh at yourself, and enjoy doing it?
It wasn't until I was in my 20s I think that I could laugh at myself and enjoy it. Before then, I could only do it with negative sarcasm directed more at others than myself.
Simelycreek's diary yesterday on nicknames caused me to recall a college nickname I had and how I earned it.
At college, UCB's Daily Cal took several shots at me on the front page of their 1983 April 1st (April Fool's Day) edition. They bestowed on me the moniker, Goy Gerbil. The way I found out about it was almost as funny as the parody itself. I had been up all night studying a non-academic subject when a friend burst into my room at about 7 in the morning. He was Maltese and wearing an over-size wrestler's belt (don't even ask). Obviously oblivious to the non-academic subject next to me who was starting to wake up, he began to jump up and down on my futon waving a newspaper and wildly shouting in anger. The poor non-academic subject cowered under the covers and tried to find a corner to hide in as I mumbled out, "Danny, get out. Go back to fucking bed. Whatever the hell it is tell me later."
"The whole front page is making fun of you and calling all of us Lemmings!" I grabbed the paper from him. Jeez, it was true. I immediately and uncontrollably burst out laughing as I read the first few sentences.
Sunday apotheosis scheduled
Student leader to be deified
Goy Gerbil, leader of the UC Berkeley group Students Not Obliged to Tuition [SNOTT], will be deified on Sproul Plaza sunday, religious sources said yesterday.
Gerbil, habitually garbed in black to religiously signify his selflessness, was named to the top position of the Mushroom People by a council of spiritual leaders from Borington Hall, a campus commune noted for its abundant culture.
I shouldn't have laughed. That made Danny
real mad. I was supposed to see this was the end of the world, but I just didn't see it. He gave me a short, mostly incomprehensible lecture, and then stormed out of my room as suddenly as he entered it.
I, awake now and with joy in my heart, returned to studying the non-academic subject. The rest of the day was not nearly so good. I was subject to an almost never-ending series of lectures by by friends and allies on why I was supposed to be mortified. I just didn't get how a parody could destroy a movement, especially one such as this that was centered around preventing future fee-hikes and directly affecting all students.
Nowadays I don't need to parodied on the front page to laugh at myself. Just studying a non-academic subject is enough to make me laugh at myself. You've only got one life, and laughing at, and with, that one life is one of the best joys (and way to prolong life) there are, IMHO.
Can you laugh at yourself? Are your foibles a constant source of humor for you?
