GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. We avoid discussion of political issues. If you are quitting or even thinking about quitting, please -- join us! GUS Library at dKosopedia is organically evolving, and stocked with free-range information: quit-smoking links, helpful GUS diary writing tips, and the GUS buddy list.
A message to ALL quitters. You don't have to avoid GUS if you have a failed quit. We won't give you a bad time and we consider the failed quits as "practice" for the real quit.
Quit Keeper widget which is an outstanding aid for those beginning the difficult path to quitting. It lets you know how long you haven't smoked, how many cigs you haven't smoked, how much money you've saved.
Quit Smoking Counter h/tGDbot. For those of you who have had a problem with Quit Keeper or want a different counter!
This is going to be another pretty short diary because now I've got to get ready for an emergency trip to the dentist and I can't believe the bad luck I'm having.
This was even supposed to be a happy diary about my wife, one of our daughters, and I going out to the mountain yesterday to visit a little waterfall and look for Native American artifacts. And we really did have a wonderful day of it.
For one thing this is sort of our own personal little water fall that very few people even know about. Its located on land adjacent to a ranch that is owned by my extended family and the trick is it only runs off and on. It actually only has water falling over it either in the spring or after big rains which we very seldom get around where we live. There is also no road to it. You can drive within a half mile of it but then have to hike the rest of the way. And even then, when you get there its not all that big of a waterfall and is only about 30 feet high. But its always worth the hike to us if for no other reason its "our" waterfall.
And it was even a little more worth it yesterday because we have had a few rains lately and while the waterfall was barely running there has been enough moisture to get lots of flowers growing and the whole countryside is lush and green. So it was a beautiful nature hike.
At least far better than the artifact hunting which didn't turn up much more than a bunch of interesting "chippers" but no arrowheads, knives, or other recognizable tools. But that was OK too. You don't find a "keeper" every time you go artifact hunting. The main thing is to just go, walk around slowly, looking at the ground, allow your mind to wonder and enjoy the peace and tranquility of nature.
I was even going to see if I could figure out how to take another much needed Daily Kos diary step and see if I could figure out how to post pictures and at least show you GUSers a picture of the falls and some of our artifacts. And I still hope to do that.
But instead after we got back home yesterday evening about the time I was going to start writing this diary I was eating a snack (and not even a hard snack) when I heard a snap and could tell something was dreadfully wrong in my mouth. So I jumped up and ran to the bathroom, took out my partial, and sure enough the tooth the dentist had just performed a root canal on came out with it.
I could not believe that and have to admit its put me in an emotional tailspin where I can't concentrate on anything else until I see what the dentist has to say about a root canal that didn't last a week. So right now this is about the best I can do for a diary this morning. Sorry about that.
However, if there is anything on the positive side, it is that set-backs like this in the past would always send me running for my cigarettes. But so far at least that hasn't happened this time.
