A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Are YOU ready to start?
The group name here, Connect! Unite! Act!, begins with "Connect!".
Do you connect here with others? With new users? How about in your own life. Do you make connections which help you Unite with other like-minded individuals?
Once you meet with those like-minded individuals, are you still just individuals, or are you now a member of a new group?
Is that group content to continue to Meetup and share a meal, talk about family? Or have you begun the Action for which the C! U! A! group was founded:
Meetup with folks who live where you live, to plan strategies to participate in actions which can make a difference. [Connect!]
Short term goal: get every Kossack into one of these groups [Unite!]
Long-term goal: get ready to mobilize in 2020 to change the face of State Legislatures, so that when it comes time for Redistricting after the 2020 Census, the lines that get draw THIS TIME will favor the Democratic candidates for the next ten years. [Act!]
Because what is Daily Kos, if not a virtual Meetup, happening all day (and all night) every day of every week of the entire year?
A sandbox in which to hone your skills at learning new and interesting facts about your OUR nation and it's history (sometimes a bit of that history you might rather not have learned because it's rather ugly).
A proving ground in which to share what you know (or at least what you think you know) with others, and learn from them in return.
A place to call Home (on the Internet).
But Daily Kos is much more than that, friends. It's a training ground for the next wave of Political Activists who are informed voters, and who desire that each of their fellow Americans become informed voters, too.
So I have a challenge for those willing to accept it. A bit of experience-making, to help you understand how easy it might be for a few hundred thousand average Americans from all walks of life to actually change something significant about our entire nation - in just a few short years from now.
Are YOU ready for this challenge? I hope so. It's going to take as many of us as possible to do what might seem to many to be impossible. Considering that we have the (apparently bottomless pockets of the) Koch Brothers and about 40 years worth of Think Tanks and (mostly) conservative Media to contend with. The plain and simple truth is that the vast money of the Koch brothers and their ilk makes a loud sound in America - but there is something else in this country which can make a LOUDER sound. You know what that is?
The voices of a multitude of average people all raised in a single cry of #StrongerTogether. That's what.
It's the idea which the Founding Fathers used to bring together the colonials to take up arms against the (then) unbeatable might of the British Redcoats.
It's the idea of black slaves who longed for freedom and their Abolitionist allies, who found that a single voice cannot be heard, but that a voice made up of thousands and then millions cannot be denied.
This country might have been started by white men who owned real property (and slaves, too). But it's inhabited today by a diverse, multi-ethnic population of over 308 million souls. The wealthiest 1% of the nation owns nearly everything now, it seems.
But they still don't own us, The People. And they don't own our votes.
I tell you that it's time to Connect here, online, via social media and whatever forums you take part in. It's time to Unite with other like-minded individuals, here online and more importantly, in your own communities over the coming weeks and months. Because sooner than you think, it's going to be time to ACT.
Why? Because if you want to live in a nation which is worth living in, YOU have to do something besides just sit around and wait for someone else to fix things.
So here's my challenge to everyone who reads this diary today:
Ask ONE person you don't already know if they are a registered voter.
It can be by knocking on the door of someone on your street or in your apartment building.
It can be someone in the grocery store when you shop this week for food.
But get up the nerve. Ask them "Do you mind if I ask, are you a registered voter?" If they answer you, just remind them that there's an election on November 4th and then say, "thanks for your time".
And walk away.
Then come back next week and tell me how it went. I'll have another challenge for you. I promise. Because it's time to get off our duffs, and out in the streets - and not merely to Rally or March - but to Connect with our fellow Americans.
So that we can get ready to Unite and Act a bit further on down the road.
As Benjamin Franklin is reported to have told a woman, when asked sort of government the delegates had created as he was leaving the Constitutional Convention:
A Republic, madam. If you can keep it.
The brevity of that response should not cause us to under-value its essential meaning: democratic republics are not merely founded upon the consent of the people, they are also absolutely dependent upon the active and informed involvement of the people for their continued good health.
Me? I intend to DO SOMETHING to keep the Republic alive. I have children and grandchildren. How can I just do nothing, and leave them the future that the crazy, racist, Republicans keep telling us that they are intent on? That way lies madness.
Not a country worth living in.
So who is up to my 1st Challenge on the road to Action?

by ZenTrainer ♥ for Nashville KosKats
August 16th, the KosKats met up at the lake at Shipwreck Cove; Patrick is Lucky, Zen Trainer, Mr. and Ms. Sow Hat and 2 red county anonymous dems.
From Zen Trainer:
The Democrats aren’t even trying here. We talked about how to get someone with some sense in here running our state party. I had a name in mind - Mary Mancini.
[...] The other thing we talked about is Moral Mondays. I’d like to really concentrate on getting our legislature to force our Governor to accept expanded Medicaid for our state. I need big time help for that. Most of the KosKats who came to this meet-up don’t live in Nashville, they are on the outskirts. So we need some more local KosKats to step up.

The Kosacadia Kossacks (rsmpdx, winglion, loggersbrat & Sara R) got together at their local Food Truck pod. They stamped money to support the Stamp Stampede which was organized by Ben Cohen of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream as a citizen effort to promote a Constitutional amendment to undo the pernicious effects of the Citizens United decision. Sara R has set up a Daily Kos group to rally others to this cause, please send them a Kosmail if you'd like to join in.

by John Crapper ♥ for Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks
Excerpts from John Crapper:
[...] Within minutes of my first conversation with Penny GC she said it best. "You know, I feel like I already know you from your posts and comments. Do you know what I mean?" And I immediately nodded my head feeling exactly the same way. That is the beauty of the Kossack experience!
[...] Finally, I gave each an assignment. I am a teacher you know so it's in my DNA. I asked each person to recruit one person in their circle of friends to become a Kossack and join Seattle & Puget Sound Kossacks. It's this simple. [...]
Thanks, Mr. Crapper for this excellent organizing of Seattle. We have big hopes for mobilizing all of Washington. So great of you to be on board here in the beginning with such an important metropolitan area.

by remembrance ♥ for Silicon Valley Kossacks
Last Sunday, Silicon Valley Kossacks had their first meet up right in the hub of Downtown San Jose, where plutocrats, technocrats, and college students gather over local brew. The patio of Gordon Biersch was the setting of our open air meeting that would give cause to our newly formed group and inspire us to reach out to voters about progressive candidates and policies.
[...] If you live in the 17th, 18th, or 19th district, please join Silicon Valley Kossacks. If you are not a Daily Kos user but would like to work with us, please make a user account and leave us a comment below. You can follow our group by clicking on the ♥ at the top of the page.
