Top Comments appears nightly, as a round-up of the best comments on Daily Kos. Surely you come across comments daily that are perceptive, apropos and .. well, perhaps even humorous. But they are more meaningful if they're well-known ... which is where you come in (especially in diaries/stories receiving little attention).
Send your nominations to TopComments at gmail dot com by 9:30 PM Eastern Time nightly, and indicate (a) why you liked the comment, and (b) your Dkos user name (to properly credit you) as well as a link to the comment itself.
I was looking forward to a great day at the Cheers & Jeers meet-up last Saturday. That's a nearly two-hour drive from my vantage point here on the Vermont/ New Hampshire border (with western Massachusetts sixty miles to the south). But before I went there - what better way to begin than with a hike on our local Rail Trail for an hour or so?
A popular bridgehead - especially as this section has (a) a small cinder parking lot, and (b) some scenic river crossings.
A warning sign for snowmobilers in the winter. Rather different from the Boston & Maine Railway which last ran passenger trains here in 1965 and discontinued freight in the early 1970's.
This is the Mascoma River - which winds underneath this trail several times. During the autumn, this river valley gets some morning fog - and today is no exception.
Ahhh .... some color. This is a lackluster autumn foliage season (due to an unusually hot and dry summer) so it's nice to see that splash of color.
Just arrived in Portsmouth. New Hampshire only has 17+ miles bordering the Atlantic coast, and Portsmouth is the last stop before Maine. In the distance, you can see the Interstate 95 Piscataqua River Bridge that spans the aforementioned Piscataqua River that separates New Hampshire and Maine.
In addition to have the requisite eating/drinking establishments common to a seaport, Portsmouth (with only about 25k population) punches above its weight, with lots of boutiques and comparatively few large chain shops.
This is Market Square - in the heart of downtown. Around the corner was a now-defunct small hardware store whose door sign listed the hours from Monday through Saturday, and then for Sunday had "Go to Church".
Federalist- style architecture as far as the eye can see - the old and the new.
Yeah, I know ..... but any store that is promoting hugs - and risking ridicule in the process - deserves a mention.
Destination reached: the Portsmouth Brewery - the Granite State's first brewpub.
That is what was on tap that day. Incidentally, the word "Smutty" does not refer to Debauchery Central ... but instead, to Smuttynose Brewing - a sister company to the brewpub - and which itself is named after Smuttynose Island - a small island located six miles off the coast of Portsmouth.
Ahhh, yes ... none other than Common Sense Mainer and BiPM - for whom I hope you'll consider making a contribution for. After all, simply maintaining his infamous Snark Tank is a full-time job.
From left-to-right: kptlaurie, mik, Brillig and DtheO
From left-to-right: mayim, AnneElizabeth, Fennster and Simple dig in.
The first of two quilts - that the redoubtable Sara R makes - that wound its way here. First: The Red to Blue quilt, which BiPM and Michael won, was a benefit for Jack Conway's campaign in Kentucky.
And second, the Star Quilt was won by Simple and all proceeds went to INDN - the Indigenous Democratic Network (with AnneElizabeth at left).
All of Sara R's quilts, it should be duly noted, are inspected by Goldie the Cat - they do not leave the house without her approval.
Not all of the attendees (as two had to leave) but a nice remembrance of an excellent day. (That name on the wall sounds like a rural northern New Englander of both Yankee and French-Canadian stock).
If any of you can arrange Cheers & Jeers, Daily Kos, Drinking Liberally ... or any other sort of meet-up where the only business on the agenda is fun - then you'll know what this day meant to us.
Now, on to Top Comments:
-------------------------------
From trashablanca:
In this diary by erratic asking people "What was your last most beautiful moment?" - this response by crose is in the moment - really.
From a self-described inebriated Blueyedace2:
In this Daily Show/Colbert Report diary .... well, either this comment by jaywillie about gravity makes Top Comments or I'll stop doing something or other. Or something.
Several from jane smythe:
First, blue aardvark asks "Why do Republicans hate election law?" - to which OHknighty replies, "Because if they cheat they win, (and) if they were honest, no one except rich people would vote for them". And, further down the thread, lineatus explains in detail why "There are no meaningful consequences for cheating."
From sardonyx:
In beach babe in fl's diary last night on the Florida Senate Debate, ObamOcala has a very good reason to keep supporting Democrat Kendrick Meek in the Florida Senate race rather than switching to former Republican Charlie Crist against the current hyper-conservative Republican Marco Rubio, and a highly unusual analogy to illustrate the point. wbramh continues the theme downthread.
From JanF
In jotterville - thanks to Laughing Planet for sharing the list of tags from a video that Patriot Daily News Clearinghouse found about Prop 19 .... and finally, rb137 added some insight into what might have happened.
And from Ed Tracey, your faithful correspondent this evening:
In this diary by Bob Friend about how New Jersey governor Chris Christie has killed a supplementary railroad tunnel linking the Garden State with New York City - which traditionally benefits suburban Republican commuters - Bush Bites recommends the construction of a billboard stating, "If Christie weren't governor, you'd be home by now."
