Do you have a favorite day in history?
La Noche Triste (The Sad Night).
The Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City)
I can't say which is the greatest day in history, not without my brain exploding in the process of trying to narrow it down from way too many choices. On the other hand, I can easily say which is my favorite day in history. It is the date I've had listed in my profile since registering here five years ago:
La Noche Triste, June 30, 1520. That was the day indigenous Aztec forces came closest to halting the 16th Century European invasion of the Americas.
Maya (not Aztec) representation of women filling water jugs).
Some sources attribute it to the acuity of
one lone woman who late at night (while filling water jugs) caught the Spaniards trying to sneak out of town with their stolen gold. Her cries raised the entire city against them.
There are certain events in history I tend to ruminate on when I'm laying in bed having trouble sleeping (I've never used sleeping pills). There's nothing like falling asleep while meditating over a reality that is different than the one you've known during the day. The events of that rainy night are one of them.
La Noche Triste ("The Night of Sorrows") on June 30, 1520, was an important event during the Spanish conquest of Mexico, wherein Hernán Cortés and his army of Spanish conquistadors and native allies fought their way out of the Mexican capital at Tenochtitlan following the death of the Aztec king Moctezuma II, whom the Spaniards had been holding as a hostage. The event is so-named on account of the sorrow that Cortés and his surviving followers felt and expressed at the loss of life and treasure incurred in the escape from Tenochtitlan.
Aztecs assault fleeing Spaniards on the Tlacopan causeway.
The fighting was ferocious. As the Spaniards and their native allies reached the causeway, hundreds of canoes appeared in the waters alongside to harry them. The Spaniards fought their way across the causeway in the rain, sometimes using the portable bridge to cover the gaps, although as the battle progressed some gaps had become so filled with wreckage and bodies that the fugitives were able to walk across. Weighed down by gold and equipment, some of the soldiers lost their footing, fell into the lake, and drowned.
That night in the rain, the Aztecs had gotten the better of the Spaniards. Many Spaniards and allies, along with the gold they were still clutching, were dispatched to the bottom of the lake. However, the prize they most needed to sieze eluded them.
Cortés, Alvarado and the strongest and most skilled of the men had managed to fight their way out of Tenochtitlan, although they were all bloodied and exhausted. Cortés himself had been injured in the fighting. All of the artillery had been lost, as had most of the horses.
Led by
Cuitláhuac (successor to the killed
Moctezuma II), this was the apogee of Aztec resistance to Spanish conquest. Never before had they come so close to thwarting Cortés, and never again would they. It could've turned out that Cortés was one of those on the lake bottom entombed with his gold and armor. None of his captains likely could've taken his place in the complex web of alliances that allowed him eventual victory over the Aztecs.
Eventually, another expedition would've been sent from Cuba, and then another and another. However, the Aztecs had proved they could learn the Spanish tactics and how to deflect them. Perhaps with enough time, they wold've found ways of compensating for the decimation of disease brought by the Spanish.
Time would've played on their side.
While there was dissatisfaction among allied and tributary states towards harsher elements of Aztec dominance, those dissatisfactions were as nothing compared to what Spanish rule would bring. With time, and with more former allies of the Aztecs waking up to the reality of total conquest, the Aztecs could've redefined their relationship with other tribes and forged a real alliance of interest.
Against such a united indigenous front, Spanish colonial expeditions would've quickly been dumped back into the sea from whence they came (even with indigenous communities decreased via disease by as much as 90%). Without the gold and silver from the New World, Spain would've been much less capable of mounting significant expeditions of conquest.
The Aztecs, according to their own myths, arrived in the Valley of Mexico originally as relatively poor nomads compared to the ancient settled civilizations they found there. They quickly learned from those civillizations, and adopted the tools and knowledge they deemed worthwhile. They would've done the same in resisting the Spanish onslaught given time. And all that might've been from one woman.
It takes a village to raise a child, but sometimes one woman with a sharp eye is all it takes to raise a city.
Anyways, I like to think about it sometimes late at night.
What about you?
Do you have any day in history you often find yourself thinking of?
