Wondering why the diary was posted at 10:04pm Eastern? I could say it's because I finally put forward a continuing resolution to open up Top Comments and it was just passed :). But for the real reason... follow me below the dingledoodle squigglie dKosagnocchi dividerthingie fold after a word from our sponsor...
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
For a while now, I've wondered why K1 always seems to get out of school late. Not by much, but based on when the school day is supposed to end and knowing how long it takes her to get her stuff and get out of school, she's always just a few minutes behind where I expect her. Not a problem when she walks home, but it is when she needs a ride (see: Raining On Brought Viola To School Day, etc) and I have a very VERY short window to get from her school to K2's.
Recently she let me know why she's not really late, and it's NOT a typical adolescent attempt to cover up hanging at her locker to talk with friends. No, it's a systemic issue:
The clocks at school are four minutes slow.
Not one clock, mind you... ALL of them. Every classroom, the office, and most importantly the Clock That Controls The Bell. Each one is four minutes slow. The teachers all know this, as well. K1 told me yesterday about a teacher not usually in the high school who, as the end of the class approached by her watch, asked a regular high school teacher in the room whether he was concerned. "No, we're on school time, it's four minutes slow!"
So we have an entire high school that knows its clocks are wrong. Uniformly, consistently, wrong. The obvious thing is to fix the clocks to match Actual Time, right? Nope. This is The Way Things Are and apparently, we Like It That Way.
All I know is that 2:11pm is a helluva lot different than 2:15pm when I have to be a mile away, parked, and out of a car to stand in front of his school at 2:21pm. I don't want to make my kid a target for bullies by writing a LTE asking why, nor do I want to be the curmudgeon who asks the Principal because, quite obviously in the days of time-synced smartphones, she already KNOWS.
So tonight I'm entertaining reasons why a school would have their internal system set to be four minutes slow. Serious, snarky, comical or mystical, leave them in the comments!
K1 says she knows why... it's because time flies when you're having fun, right? And school is SO much fun, that of course the clocks are... hrmm, nevermind :)
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything
without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do
not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.

From highacidity:
Oh boy, what a great question by JamieH! That's exactly how I feel. Also a great answer by MHB too, be sure to read both ;-)
From BeninSC:
kovie riffed on the 'SHUTDOWN' theme in last night's Top Comments diary! Well done!
Flagged by Denise Oliver Velez, this comment by aaraujo intends to help Washington's football team with a name.
Flagged by Youffraita, this comment by agnostic really pushes the limits on satirical right wing bigot-speak, you hear, morans?! (It IS satire, yes?!)
From Yours Truly, brillig:
At some point Hunter is going to take out a restraining order on me because I stalk his diaries, like this one. But in my defense I claim he makes others rise even higher in their comments, such as this one by FishOutOfWater. It ignited an entire THREAD of goodness by yashko and mrsgoo!
DuvalDem with a comparison of those holding our government hostage. In Joan McCarter's Debt ceiling hike? Not without killing Obamacare, House GOP says.
