This past Saturday tmservo433 delivered a great event. Almost 30 people attended what tmservo433 calls the first session of the evening that lasted until 11:30 P.M. The second session of the evening included about ten more people lurking outside the door and some working as hotel staff inside the room. So after the meet-up ended, on-lookers from the hall and hotel service people wanted to talk about what they overheard coming out of the ballroom. For example, the round table discussion about the importance of increasing the minimum wage resonated with the waitstaff and they chimed in about that with strong opinons. A ballroom dancing couple applauded the progressive discussion they could hear on the other side of the partition. This event united progressives within its reach!

A few weeks ago, tmservo433 reserved a small ballroom at the Marriott, he planned for personally catering a casual meal and he invited local PACS and candidates to meet with our Kossacks. Above and beyond the call of duty, he did this all on his own, hoping to attract fellow Kossacks.

Several candidates and groups provided content and videos and we had representatives from the Paul Davis campaign for Governor who were kind enough to address us and talk about why Kansas is winnable in 2014.
The Margie Wakefield for Congress campaign also provided video.

Jen Hayden, Director of Special Projects for Daily Kos, was able to attend and address the group. Eric Thut, Operations Director for Netroots Nation, spoke for a few minutes. Both are residents of Kansas City.

In the numerous Kosmails tmservo433 sent me leading up to this event he mentioned that a lot of non-Kossacks would be attending. So I constructed a .pdf document with the Daily Kos header graphic and content (provided by Meteor Blades) about Daily Kos to be a handout for those non-Kossacks. We wanted to invite them to join in the conversation at Daily Kos.

Michael Bersin, from Show Me Progress (Missouri's Progressive Politics Community) posted a very nice photo diary recap of the event.

After food, a brief slide presentation documenting the foibles of right wingnut office holders in Missouri and Kansas, and presentations from two 2014 Kansas campaigns, participants engaged in a wide ranging discussion of their campaign experiences and the political landscape in Missouri and Kansas for 2014 and beyond.

[snip]

There was commentary on the relative effectiveness and value of get out the vote efforts (phones, door to door, voter registration) and the perceived priorities of centralized/coordinated statewide/national campaigns. It came down to - keep it local, register voters, identify your voters, and drag their sorry asses to the polls on Election Day. [Emphasis mine]

[snip]

There was also a significant amount of discussion about engaging office holders and documenting and holding them accountable in their public forums. In the world of the Internets and social media triangulation by the current crop of right wingnuts in office is becoming increasingly difficult for them to pull off. It's not so easy for them to cater to their restive teabagger base.

What a terrific event. I love our casual SFKossack dinners and potlucks to build camaraderie. A comfortable progressive network is much needed for all of us. But ultimately this event is a perfect example of what each of our groups needs to be doing. Another fine example is the Get-Out-the-Vote effort randallt and davehouck have been championing with DKos Asheville in North Carolina.

Please visit tmservo433's diary for written details on this terrific event! You can join Kansas & Missouri Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to tmservo433.

DKos Asheville Voter Registration Project, week 4

by randalltfor DKos Asheville

Asheville, NC gets out the vote!

The following is a brief roundup of the DKos Asheville Voter Registration Project's fourth outing. We've been setting up every Tuesday now for the last four weeks at Earth Fare, a natural food store at Westgate Shopping Center in Asheville. We have a nice spot on the patio outside the store. This time with less people but more snow, freezing weather and a killer wind!

L-R: Intrepid volunteers, randallt and davehouck. Braving the cold.

My favorite excerpt from randallt's diary:

Mystery Kossack?

When I was inside getting my pizza, a woman came up to David with a great story. She was recently reading Daily Kos and had seen our pictures from one of our diaries or in the New Day daily post. On her way to the store today she was wondering if she might see us and she did. She was thrilled.

?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
