A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do You Do Your Own Taxes ?
I do our taxes and always have. Ours are pretty simple really, W-2, 1099R, not enough deductions to make itemizing worthwhile. It would be different I'm sure if we had our own business or investment income but then we could afford an accountant. The way it stands now I just can't see paying someone else to do them. A lot of people in our situation do though. I see them at those booths H&R Block sets up in the supermarket; ordinary working stiffs, W-2s in hand. When I was in the 6th grade we filled out a Form 1040 as a class project. There was only one form then and a bunch of 6th graders could fill it in under the guidance of a teacher. Now they have a 1040EZ and I understand people pay to get those done.
I guess a lot of people worry about being called in by the IRS for an audit too. It's never happened to me, again, a pretty straightforward form, not a lot of chance to cheat. The chances of being audited are pretty small anyway. An AP story in my paper yesterday began with this:
As millions of Americans race to meet Tuesday's tax deadline, their chances of getting audited are lower than they have been in years. Budget cuts and new responsibilities are straining the Internal Revenue Service's ability to police tax returns. This year, the IRS will have fewer agents auditing returns than at any time since at least the 1980s.
The article quoted from an interview with IRS Commissioner John Koskinen who complained of budget and staff cuts to his agency.
"We keep going after the people who look like the worst of the bad guys," IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said in an interview. "But there are going to be some people that we should catch, either in terms of collecting the revenue from them or prosecuting them, that we're not going to catch."
I don't mind paying taxes. We all need government services and I understand taxation as the way we chip-in to pay for stuff. The other side doesn't see it that way. They see taxes as confiscation and the people who collect them as jack-booted thugs, or maybe the Gestapo. It makes perfect sense to Republicans that the IRS should be defunded and understaffed
even though it means less revenue. You'd think people who were concerned about the Federal Budget Deficit would want more revenue, not less. No matter, they keep cutting the agency's budget. The
IRS got hammered in the 2014 budget. According to the House Appropriations Committee it will be funded at a lower level than it was in 2009. The President's budget proposes an increase in funding for the IRS.
Koskinen said the IRS could scrutinize more returns — and collect billions more in revenue — with more resources. The president's budget proposal says the IRS would collect an additional $6 for every $1 increase in the agency's enforcement budget. Koskinen said he makes that argument all the time, but for some reason, it's not playing well in Congress. "I say that and everybody shrugs and goes on about their business," Koskinen said. "I have not figured out either philosophically or psychologically why nobody seems to care whether we collect the revenue or not."
Obviously, it doesn't make a lick of sense to cut IRS staffing if you're worried about the Deficit. The IRS brings in more money than it costs. Maybe there's a different motive, maybe the Republicans are protecting corporate tax-cheats. This chart shows audit rates for large corporations over time.
There's been an increase in audits of large corporations in the last couple of years but the trend is clear; fewer audits of Big Biz. If you're a working stiff you can't really cheat that much. If your employer reports that you earned 30k and you claim only 15, that'll be picked up by a computer. It doesn't take much staff to keep you honest. Corporations deploy battalions of lawyers and accountants when they go to war with the government over what they owe. Cutting the IRS budget means fewer lawyers and CPAs working for Uncle Sam. It makes tax evasion easier. Surprise, surprise, it's part of the same old same old. Cutting the budget for the IRS, in conjunction with tax cuts for corporations and corporations stashing their profits offshore, means that corporations pay less and less into the Federal Treasury. And that, Mr. and Mrs. W-2, means that we must pick up the slack. Happy Tax Day!

by Azazello ♥ for Baja Arizona Kossacks
The Baja Kossacks just had their 4th Annual Picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. sneakers563. The group is shepherded by Azazello, an official member of DKos since 2009. From his diary and about his state:
More and better Democrats is always a popular subject for debate here in Baja AZ, especially in an election year. Against the charge that Arizona is an incurably red state I often point out that 5 of our 9 US Reps are Democrats. This is true but it doesn't tell the whole story. While we in Tucson are justifiably proud of Raúl Grijalva (Wikipedia HERE) whose first elected office was board member for Tucson Unified School District #1, most of Tucson and all of Cochise County are now represented by Ron Barber (Wikipedia HERE) who is a very Blue Dog indeed. For an example of this Blue Doggedness see this article at Alternet ☛ 5 Million Dirty Reasons for Record Deportations.
He's on top of it and thanks to him for gathering Kossacks together to become stronger.

Four Kossack regional groups descend on the California State Capitol
to demand that Governor Jerry Brown ban
the oil and gas production process known as fracking
by navajo ♥ for Connect! Unite! Act!
Representing Northern California, the SFKossacks, Central Valley Kossacks, Paradise & Chico Kossacks and the Silicon Valley Kossacks gathered on the mall of our state capitol in Sacramento on Saturday, March 15th to protest fracking. Governor Brown has the ability to ban the environmentally destructive, water-intensive oil extraction practice known as hydraulic fracturing in California. The state is in a severe drought and the last place our water should go is into fracking. It is estimated the protesters numbered around 4000. We endured the hot sun which sent the temperatures into the 80s as we gathered midday to make a lot of noise and get the attention of the Governor.
Please note red arrow pointing to our Daily Kos banner to gather all us Kossacks together!
