A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Is there a secession movement where you live?
Where I live there is a secession movement and it's getting stronger. Counties in southern Oregon and northern California are deciding if they want to secede to create a 51st state called the State of Jefferson. More and more county governing councils are considering joining it including Butte County.
These counties are home to a large number of residents who feel the states of Oregon and California don't do anything for them really. They are also strongly against the control of CO2 emissions and don't like taxation of course. The reason they don't want emission controls is because they believe that's a problem for cities with dense populations. They most certainly are not city folk nor should they have to comply with rules and laws made by city folk. I do get that overall attitude, but I don't really get their beef about CO2 because farm equipment and trucks used in farming and ranching were exempted from having to comply with EPA vehicle emission standards by George W. Bush, so it really isn't even an issue.
They don't like the Federal Government either, especially the Bureau of Land Management. They have the attitude all the land is theirs so the Feds need to butt out. Most of these people are just into the idea of it all really. It's something that makes them feel proud about where they live because it discriminates against city folks which is to also say against liberals and Democrats. It's an "us vs. them" thing. However, a number of them are part of the sovereign citizen movement which doesn't recognize the Federal Government at all. Sovereign citizens don't pay taxes and claim the only legitimate legal authority is the county Sheriff (Cliven Bundy-type folks).
Here is The Great Seal of State of Jefferson:
The two "X's" represent blotting out the two capitols of Salem, Oregon and Sacramento, California. In other words, they don't want to recognize these state's governments as having any jurisdiction over them. I see more and more bumper stickers for the State of Jefferson all the time when driving around Paradise. One local auto dealership now has State of Jefferson license plate holders that come with every vehicle sold. I find that ironic due to the fact those holders will be holding California or Oregon state license plates. Oh well. I'm also seeing a lot more of these flags flying:
The State of Jefferson idea started in 1941. Every Thursday for a few weeks, those who were really into this idea performed civil disobedience by blocking highways and roadways. When vehicles stopped, they let them know they were entering the State of Jefferson then handed them literature. This all came to an abrupt end when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The capitol of The State of Jefferson was to be Yreka, CA, and it will be now as well, if this ever actually happens. The picture below is from Yreka today.
Here's their facebook page for Butte County: https://www.facebook.com/...
Here are a couple more of their web pages, which really don't say all that much: http://www.stateofjefferson.com/ & http://www.jeffersonstate.com/
Video anyone?
Well, that's all I have to say about the State of Jefferson. I do have a lot of questions though. How would they govern themselves? How would they pay for anything since so many don't believe in taxes? Would they provide any services? How about police, schools and fire departments? The reservoirs here are Federally or State owned, so what about water? Almost each of these counties gets more money from the state and federal governments than they pay in taxes. Do they not realize that or understand the ramifications if that were to end? I truly don't believe these folks have thought things through. It's just a hunch. Oh well.
Is the area where you live going to leave the Union any time soon?

by John Crapper ♥ for Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks
Organizer John Crapper completed another meet-up, from his agenda:
Next, I updated the group on our efforts to identify campaigns we would like to assist in the upcoming elections. There are three that have been under active discussion but nothing has been firmly decided. We all agreed it was important to pick races that would help Washington Democrats regain control of the Senate.
Next, I asked for ideas, suggestions and assistance identifying future guest speakers. In connection with that I urged all to invite their friends to become Kossacks and join us to enhance our clout.
Longtime Kossack
LarisaW, President of
Progressive Radio Northwest (PRNW), was in attendance. She is leading an effort to bring back progressive radio to the NW.

by Avilyn ♥ for New Jersey Kossacks
The New Jersey Kossacks held their inaugural meet-up on June 14, 2014. Thanks so much to Avilyn for taking up the reins and leading this important group. She noticed in all of the Christy diaries that many New Jersey folk came out of lurking or signed up to comment. She was motivated by this to start this group. I'm glad because there's a lot of work to do in New Jersey. I also noticed in her start-up diaries that many people couldn't attend this event but wanted to be invited to the next event. She had 18 Kossacks sign up with her first announcement of the new group. This is excellent and I'm sure there are more New Jersey Kossacks out there.
Here's the group photo:

Event Organizers! Please contact wink from Netrootsradio.com by KosMail to schedule airtime with them to live broadcast your Event. Wink & Justice will then promote it on The After Show radio program!
