A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Did you have a favorite firework as a kid?

Well, I don't know where you can even get Fireworks anymore. Since 1978 I've lived in places where fireworks are illegal. That doesn't mean some folks don't acquire them. One guy I saw at my office yesterday just drove back from Idaho after having bought a bunch of them. I also had a neighbor right next door who had a great fireworks display on his driveway every 4th of July. He worked for AT&T and had "connections." He's since moved away. I never understood why the cops or fire department never showed up because his firework displays lasted a good hour. Most of what he got were Roman Candles.

81776372DM009_CALIFORNIA_FI

When I was a kid however, fireworks were legal everywhere, and you could buy anything they made. Certain kids would get M80's and put them in a crack in telephone poles then explode them. Since M80's were as strong as 1/4th stick of dynamite, they'd crack the telephone pole it's entire length. There was a gang of these guys I knew that always tried to top their previous year's record in seeing how many telephone poles they could destroy that way. It was a serious pain for the City of Denver to replace each of them.

m80

Another favorite thing these guys would do, naturally, was to light a cherry bomb and throw it in the school's toilets just before it exploded. Of course it would crack the toilet bowl and water would gush out all over the floor. This was considered to be "fun times" by them. No one ever ratted them out because they were way too intimidating.

cherry bombs

I was not like any of these guys who were the bad boys. To be honest, they mostly were the jocks and bullies who'd hang around together and be annoying jerks to others a lot of the time. I'm sure we all remember that crowd. But like any normal kid, I was certainly interested in watching those guys do some of that stuff. I wonder if that makes me bad too?

My favorite firework was the pop bottle rocket. I'd buy them by the gross (that's 144). Normally I'd buy about 12 gross to have a stash of 1728 pop bottle rockets for the 4th of July season. Then we'd have pop bottle rocket wars. We'd take long pipes about six feet long and 1/2 inch in diameter that we'd use as bazookas. One guy would light a pop bottle rocket and place it in the back end of the pipe. The other guy would be holding the pipe on his shoulder and aim it at the target. The BEST thing was to have the thing explode right near the "enemy" so they'd have ringing ears for a few minutes. Pop bottle rockets were really tame things. Even if one accidentally exploded in your hand, you'd just have a small burn mark. We'd spend hours with two or more groups hiding behind hills and trees shooting pop bottle rockets at each other.

One night around this time of year, I was walking home from a friend's house. The short cut was through a park. In the middle of the park were a bunch of tennis courts. Walking through the tennis courts was the quickest way to traverse the park. As I made my way across the tennis courts all of a sudden a hundred pop bottle rockets came flying along the smooth ground of the courts at me from every direction. That made me jump up and run like bunny. But I must admit, those guys, whoever they were, got me good. It was really quite an impressive site to see all those pop bottle rockets zipping along with their fiery trails behind and then popping all about me. I never saw who did that. It had to be a number of guys who were just waiting for some sucker like me to cross those tennis courts at night. Good times.

Seattle's Summer Solstice Meet up

by John Crapper  ♥ for Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks

Organizer John Crapper completed another meet-up, from his agenda:

Next, I updated the group on our efforts to identify campaigns we would like to assist in the upcoming elections.  There are three that have been under active discussion but nothing has been firmly decided. We all agreed it was important to pick races that would help Washington Democrats regain control of the Senate.

Next, I asked for ideas, suggestions and assistance identifying future guest speakers.  In connection with that I urged all to invite their friends to become Kossacks and join us to enhance our clout.

Longtime Kossack LarisaW, President of Progressive Radio Northwest (PRNW), was in attendance. She is leading an effort to bring back progressive radio to the NW.

NJ Meetup - Photo Recap

by Avilynfor New Jersey Kossacks

The New Jersey Kossacks held their inaugural meet-up on June 14, 2014. Thanks so much to Avilyn for taking up the reins and leading this important group. She noticed in all of the Christy diaries that many New Jersey folk came out of lurking or signed up to comment. She was motivated by this to start this group. I'm glad because there's a lot of work to do in New Jersey. I also noticed in her start-up diaries that many people couldn't attend this event but wanted to be invited to the next event. She had 18 Kossacks sign up with her first announcement of the new group. This is excellent and I'm sure there are more New Jersey Kossacks out there.

Here's the group photo:

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
