A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Have you been to a fortune teller of any type?
Today's CUA is another brought to you by Thinking Fella. A number of weeks ago he gave me some ideas he thought would make good topics. I like this one.
In my life I've actually been to two different types of fortune tellers. Each time I did so because someone else wanted me to do it. Twice I've been to "tea leaf readers." The first time I went at the insistence of my dad's wife (she's not my mom). I don't really know why she thought this tea leaf reader was so special. I went. She gave me a cup of tea with tea leaves floating around in it. I was supposed to drink all the tea leaving just a bit of liquid and the leaves in the cup. I'll tell you, drinking tea with leaves floating around it is not so great. Lots of spitting bits of leaves out ensues.
Then I was told to hand over the tea cup. She swirled the leaves that were left around the cup as she poured off the remaining liquid. The tea leaves that were stuck to the sides and bottom of the cup is what she read. I can tell you she told me things that I think you could say about practically anyone. Some of what she came up with I'm sure was due to her ability to read people pretty well. You can tell a lot about a person after talking with them for a bit, including their basic temperament.
I don't remember any of what she told me with the exception of one thing. I was 26 years old at the time and single. She told me I would marry and that my wife's name would begin with the letter "C." That came to pass. She was right. I think it was a lucky guess, but who knows?
The second time I went to another fortune teller was when I lived in Santa Cruz. Smileycreek, who was still working in X-ray at that time, had a co-worker who had gone to a fortune teller women. She talked smileycreek and me into going with her. If I recall correctly, we had to drive to Watsonville. First smileycreek's co-worker went into the women's home while smileycreek and I sat outside in the car. When she was done, smileycreek and I each had our turn.
I don't remember anything she said at all. I do remember thinking it was pretty hokey, but what do I know about rating fortune tellers?
I've had hand reading done a couple times by people that do Chinese hand reading. There is only one thing I remember from those readings. I was told I have a long life line but that it was thinner at a place which corresponded to when I should be about in my mid-50's. This thinner part of my life line was intersected by some very fine lines. I was told that meant I'd experience some event that came from outside which would be life threatening and would require strong medical attention. I was told that if I made it past that I'd live to be an old man. It would either be a physical accident or some situation that came to me by accident. Whatever it was, it would not be something I did purposefully to cause it. I was also told I'd most likely survive, but to get through it would be very difficult and draining to my body but I had the constitution to get through it.
Well what do you know? At age 54 I got cancer which was caused by acquiring a virus that came from out there vs. a cancer that was caused by any genetics within my body itself. The treatment has been a total success...so far. Strangely, the cancer I had is one that, once it's literally fried out of you, has hardly any chance of returning. I suppose this experience could be interpreted as having been foretold by a Chinese hand reader.
I'm friends with a local astrologer who goes by the name Kosmic Kev. I've posted some of his stuff about Scorpios in comments just for shits and giggles. As far as I'm concerned the best way to approach astrology is to look at your horoscope the week after it came out to see if any of what was foretold happened at all.
Astrologers talk in general terms based upon the various qualities planets are said to embody plus where they are found in the 12 houses relative to your sun sign at any given time. On top of that astrologers also interpret things from the different angles the planets have relative to one another in your chart at the time. Mostly it seems to me astrology is about the power of suggestion more than anything else. But again, what do I really know about astrology?
Have you ever been to any type of fortune teller?

65 Kossacks gathered at the home of Vetwife on August 9th to listen to four candidates in person and three other candidates skyped in. They each were allowed to speak for 10 minutes and then had five minutes to answer questions. Reverend Robert of NAACP AME Moral Mondays spoke along with veteran advocates, medical MJ leaders and an Occupier organizer. Gordon20024 deserves another Kossack Hero award for supplying ALL the food! Vetwife reports that several campaigns have been in touch with her for support since this meet-up.

Asheville's second Mountain Moral Monday protest was [Monday, August 4th] and it was inspiring to say the least. The Reverend Barber delivered a beauty of a speech that kept most people on their feet the whole time. Kossacks from far and wide met up for the event with a few of us meeting ahead of time and a few of us meeting at the rally.

by Mother Mags ♥ for Phoenix Kossacks and Baja Arizona Kossacks
Kossacks attended the meet-up from around the state, helped out by strong recruitment from Azazello and other Baja Arizona friends south of the Gila River.
[...] A week before the meet-up fewer than 20 people had registered, and we anticipated a big table where we could discuss specific races and issues in our communities. Then something happened, and the RSVPs more than doubled in a week. Thanks, Markos, for the recruitment tool!
navajo: "I had a great time attending this meet-up. I chatted with almost everyone individually and then spoke to the whole group about what Daily Kos can do for them in terms of organizing and helping their ranks grow. Not one person wanted to rehash the online dispute. Everyone wanted to move forward. What a great group! The evening was extremely enjoyable and I look forward to working with Arizona Kossacks on ACTION items in their state going forward."
