A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Any Movie Locations Where You Live ?
I've lived in the Southwest all my life. It's a picturesque region so a lot of movies have been filmed out here, especially in Arizona. It's always fun when you're watching a movie and you recognize the location. The most famous movie location in Arizona, and instantly recognizable, is Monument Valley. Director John Ford chose the spectacular buttes in the valley as the setting for his 1939 film Stagecoach which starred John Wayne. Ford returned to Monument Valley to make either 7 or 9 more films, depending on your source, many of which also had "The Duke" in the starring role. This picture is from The Searchers, another Ford/Wayne Western. The Searchers is actually a pretty good movie; it makes a lot of Top Ten lists. Like a lot of movies filmed in Arizona, the story is supposed to be taking place in Texas. The cumulative effect of all these movies being shot in Monument Valley is that people all over the word associate those buttes with Arizona so they, or something like them, show up in all kinds of paintings, posters and cartoons. Like the Roadrunner cartoons. Beep Beep.
As y'all surely know by now, I live in Tucson and a ton of movies have been filmed here. There are some where the story takes place here so they're filmed at different places around town. A lot of Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore takes place in Tucson, and was shot here, and there's a forgettable little film called White Line Fever for which your diarist was a production assistant when he was in college. (No, I didn't get a mention in the credits.) Most of the movies made here have been Westerns. I mentioned Old Tucson Studios in a previous diary for this series. It was built in 1939 for a movie entitled, appropriately enough, Arizona. There's a long list of movies and TV series that have been filmed the in the previous link. This picture is from Rio Bravo, another John Wayne film that supposedly takes place in Texas. Behind Walter Brennan you can see a saguaro cactus. That plant is the indicator species for the Sonoran Desert, they grow nowhere else, and if you see one of those in a movie, you know it was shot in Southern Arizona, probably in Tucson.
Before I moved to Tucson I lived in the Antelope Valley. It's located in the Mojave desert just north of Los Angeles. A lot of stuff gets shot there too. Like the Sonoran Desert, the Mojave Desert also has an indicator species: the Joshua Tree. Because it's picturesque and close to L.A. a lot of TV series, music videos and commercials are filmed in the Antelope Valley. Car commercials especially; there are miles and miles of deserted two-lane roads out there with very little traffic and Joshua Trees in the background. If you see a Joshua Tree in a commercial or music vid you know it was shot in the Mojave Desert, probably in the Antelope Valley.
There are a couple of locations out in the A.V that show up every now and then. One is Vasquez Rocks, off the 14 near Acton. That's Captain Kirk fighting a death match with some sort of Lizard Man at Vasquez Rocks in a Star Trek episode called Arena. Another location that gets used now and then is the Antelope Valley Indian Museum. In addition to the museum itself there's a little "ranch" out there. I'm not sure which movies were filmed there but I know some were and I know they were Westerns. One time when I was a kid and we were out there with the family my brother and I found a rubber Winchester, or half of one. Stunt departments have those for when one stunt man has hit another one in the head with a rifle. Rubber ones hurt less.
OK, that's today's question. Do you like it when your town shows up in a movie or TV show ? Are there any movie locations near where live ? Any news, any links, anything at all, it's an Open Thread.

by tmservo433 ♥ for Kansas & Missouri Kossacks
tmservo433 organized a registering-to-vote event for Ford County, Kansas in Dodge City to reach out to Latino voters there. He partnered with League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the Ford County Democratic Party. 150 people attended to listen to John Thomas (KS House District 119 Candidate), Jean Schodorf (Secretary of State Candidate), Jim Sherow (US House, KS District 1 Candidate), Mark Low (Kansas House Candidate, District 115).
"LULAC volunteers sat at their table and handled registration after registration as people came to the event to listen to how they could change their state. We knew that not only were we helping to register new and first time voters, we were helping to bring a message into a community that has been ignored - and to help them take that message back to their friends and families."
This is a great example of reaching out to disenfranchised communities and helping them vote. Because If Democratic base voters turn out, we win. Can't be said enough. More regions need to do this.
Please visit tmservo433's diary for many MORE photos! Enjoy! You can still REC it. You can join Kansas & Missouri Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to tmservo433.

by ZenTrainer ♥ for Nashville KosKats
August 16th, the KosKats met up at the lake at Shipwreck Cove; Patrick is Lucky, Zen Trainer, Mr. and Ms. Sow Hat and 2 red county anonymous dems.
From Zen Trainer:
The Democrats aren’t even trying here. We talked about how to get someone with some sense in here running our state party. I had a name in mind - Mary Mancini.
[...] The other thing we talked about is Moral Mondays. I’d like to really concentrate on getting our legislature to force our Governor to accept expanded Medicaid for our state. I need big time help for that. Most of the KosKats who came to this meet-up don’t live in Nashville, they are on the outskirts. So we need some more local KosKats to step up.
