A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

How's Your City's River ?
Thursday, August 20, is the City of Tucson's 240th birthday. (Forgive me, Dr. pNut, for poaching your topic, in case you were planning to write about Tucson's birthday for Thursday.) We get this date from the official Spanish document regarding the relocation of the Tubac Presidio north to the Tohono O'odham village of Chuk Son.
I, Hugo Oconor, knight of the order of Calatrava, colonel of infantry in His Majesty’s armies and Commandant Inspector of the frontier posts of New Spain, Certify: that having conducted the exploration prescribed in Article Three of the New Royal Regulation of Presidios issued by His Majesty on the Tenth of September of 1772 for the moving of the Company of San Ignacio de Tubac in the Province of Sonora, I selected and marked out in the presence of Father Francisco Garces and Lieutenant Juan de Carmona a place known as San Augustin del Tucson as the new site of the Presidio. It is situated at a distance of eighteen leagues from Tubac, fulfills the requirements of water, pasture, and wood, and effectively closes the Apache Frontier. The designation of the new presidio becomes official with the signatures of myself, Father Francisco Garces, and Lieutenant Juan Carmona, at this Mission of San Xavier del Bac, on this Twentieth Day of August of the Year 1775.
The Presidio was moved north to protect Spanish subjects, including the Tohono O'odham, from Apache raiding. Note that the new location "fulfills the requirements of water, pasture and wood."
The water would be the Rio Santa Cruz,
* and the wood was the riparian woodlands that grew along it. The Santa Cruz River originates in what is now Arizona, flows south into what is now Mexico then makes a U-Turn back into Arizona, flowing north until it merges with the Gila which flows into the Colorado. That's the way it used to flow anyway. It doesn't flow at all now. Neither does the Gila. They are both just washes now. They get a little water in them when it rains. They used to be real rivers though, way back when, and flowed year-round. That's why there were Indian villages along their banks. People need water. I think maybe
all cities grew up along rivers. Before there were railroads and highways big rivers were used for transportation. Think of all the cities along the Mississippi. A confluence of two navigable rivers was a natural location for a town. Pittsburgh, PA is located at the intersection of the Monongahela and the Allegheny Rivers. Port cities also have rivers. It was not enough just to have a bay, fresh water was also a requirement. Los Angeles, CA, for example, was founded along the Los Angeles River. For as long as I can remember the L.A. River was just a concrete storm channel but it was once a real, flowing river and I understand parts of it are being restored to its natural condition.
OK, that's all I got for this Tuesday morning, Happy Birthday Tucson and a rumination on rivers. How 'bout it folks, got any good links to share, any new meet-ups being planned and ...

Announcing Asheville, North Carolina as the location
for our next Regional Event! 9.26.15
Asheville, N.C. is the destination for September 26, 2015! DKos Asheville, the In-Real-Life group under the leadership of randallt, has been setting the example for other IRL groups across the nation regarding registering people to vote, getting out the vote, having a state open thread and setting up strategy conferences for their region. Because of this impressive leadership we've asked randallt to be the State Leader for all of North Carolina. We've got important work to do on the ground there and randallt has shown he's the person to make that happen.
All states are welcome to attend this event and if you do you can expect to meet Markos Moulitsas in person, as well as some of the Daily Kos staff. More details regarding this regional event will be shared in the future so please stay tuned to Connect! Unite! Act!
For now, SAVE THE DATE and spread the word!

The entire state of Colorado has almost 50,000 subscribers to our Daily Kos emails. We can't wait to tap into that more. We've got a lot of organizing ahead of us for Colorado. Leaders, please step up!
We've declared this road trip a great success and look forward to doing some more around the country. It's important to unite entire states in addition to cities and towns. I hope you'll contribute in some way to this effort.
