A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

You just need to walk, right?
Walking. Everybody knows that you need to do it. Walking is the single best thing you can do on a consistent basis. It's basic.
Blood pressure where capillaries meet venules (the end of arterial vessels and the beginning of veins) is zero? Seems impossible. So then, how does blood get all the way back to the heart? By muscle movement. Our muscles "milk" blood back up the veins and "milk" lymph back up the lymphatics. Both have valves that won't allow blood or lymph to flow back once it's passed a valve.
Long walks are super, hiking on trails better. Walking and hiking hones proprioception which is how your body knows where body parts are in space (nerve receptors in connective tissue). That's balance and strength.
Stagnation is what does us in. Really. I tell that to folks all the time. Just walking around anytime and anywhere as a choice is the easy key. Humans evolved to be able run for long distances at a consistent pace. It's our super power, seriously. We're supposed to walk around a lot.
Walking is important for our brains, and not just because it gets blood pumping and oxygen flowing. Of course not all types of walks are the same for the brain. Walking in beautiful surroundings vs. walking along a busy street isn't just a difference experience at the time. It creates differences in mood and mental health. We all know that too.
So, they studied different walking experiences and told us what we all know. Just walk no matter what. Do it where it feels best and you'll feel better emotionally too.
New research from a Stanford University graduate student found that people who walked through a beautiful and green part of the campus were more attentive and cheerful afterwards than another group that walked for the same amount of time by a loud freeway. The participants walked at their own pace and without music or companions. After the walk, each volunteer went to a lab for a questionnaire and brain scan, which determined their levels of happiness and attentiveness following the exercise.
Those who walked on the Stanford campus showed less blood flow to the subgenual prefrontal cortex, or the part of the brain that handles repetitive thought or negative emotion, which remained high for those who walked along the highway.
According to the Mayo Clinic, regular brisk walking can help you maintain a healthy weight, boost your mood, improve your coordination and balance, and strengthen your bones, among other benefits.

Announcing Asheville, North Carolina as the location
for our next Regional Event! 9.26.15
Asheville, N.C. is the destination for September 26, 2015! DKos Asheville, the In-Real-Life group under the leadership of randallt, has been setting the example for other IRL groups across the nation regarding registering people to vote, getting out the vote, having a state open thread and setting up strategy conferences for their region. Because of this impressive leadership we've asked randallt to be the State Leader for all of North Carolina. We've got important work to do on the ground there and randallt has shown he's the person to make that happen.
All states are welcome to attend this event and if you do you can expect to meet Markos Moulitsas in person, as well as some of the Daily Kos staff. More details regarding this regional event will be shared in the future so please stay tuned to Connect! Unite! Act!
For now, SAVE THE DATE and spread the word!

We've declared this road trip a great success and look forward to doing some more around the country. It's important to unite entire states in addition to cities and towns. I hope you'll contribute in some way to this effort.
