A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do You Have a Vintage Object You Treasure?
You could say I've been obsessed with sax lately.
Ever since Denver Dad unexpectedly shipped us the vintage gold-lacquered saxophone I've been taken with uncovering its hidden story.
The sax belonged to John's deceased younger brother. Grant, a handsome budding rock star and talented musician, won the Denver Public School's music competition three years in a row with it.
The story from John's Mom (a notorious fabulist) was that she bought it in the late 1960's at a Denver pawn shop where it had been abandoned by a black jazz musician from the 1930's who fell on hard times and hocked it.
Through the wonders of instant internet searching I was able to track down its origins via the serial number and brand. It's a 1924 CG Conn Ltd New Wonder model. After posting pictures and asking questions about it on an internet saxophone forum it turns out that while it is vintage it's not particularly rare. Had it been custom engraved it might have been truly valuable.
But that, of course, was never the point.
1924 was the first year CG Conn saxophones were publicly retailed and mass produced. I imagine a musician in the Roaring 20's walking into a music store and laying eyes on this shiny new golden beauty and wanting it so badly it hurt. I imagine it being played in a Swing era orchestra in Denver. Who knows?
Was that its only owner, or was a subsequent owner the one who was heartbroken to leave it in that pawn shop, fully intending to come back for it but unable to due to the Depression?
I wish I could somehow find out. The picture above does not do its shimmering golden Qi justice. It has a vibrational beauty that intrigues and draws me back to look at it, over and over. Perhaps it's just the last traces of talent of a charismatic lost brother that compels me to imagine its life journey.
Has any old object ever captured your imagination? Did you buy it years ago, find it at an antique store or flea market, or inherit it? Have you ever wished, deeply wished, that you could know the history of that vintage item?

What a pleasure to visit beautiful Durango! A special thanks to Thinking Fella for setting such a great example of leadership by winning a seat with his local Democratic Party Executive Committee! Yes! Go Local!
Durango had the largest collection of readers with user names:

The entire state of Colorado has almost 50,000 subscribers to our Daily Kos emails. We can't wait to tap into that more. We've got a lot of organizing ahead of us for Colorado. Leaders, please step up!
We've declared this road trip a great success and look forward to doing some more around the country. It's important to unite entire states in addition to cities and towns. I hope you'll contribute in some way to this effort.
