A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do You Like Football ?
It's that time of year again, my friends. Classes started yesterday at the U of A and the #22-ranked Arizona Wildcats open their season September 3 against University of Texas San Antonio. I like the college game better than the professional one. I watched a little pre-season NFL on Sunday, but that was just to see a couple of pretty good college quarterbacks. I very rarely watch the NFL. Sometimes I'll have a game on in the background while I do other things and when I hear the crowd noise get real loud I'll go in and catch the replay, but I don't sit there and watch the games. I get tired of commercials for fast food and yellow beer. College football is more interesting, for me anyway, but not interesting enough to make me pay for cable or satellite or whatever. Or buy a ticket. I listen to the games on the radio. If I really, really have to see a game I'll go to a sports bar. I did that last year for the BCS Championship; University of Oregon vs. THE Ohio State University. We made a mini Meet-Up out of that game. One of the Baja Arizona Kossacks is AN Ohio State alum. We watched it a a brewery. There are a couple of things that bother me about football though, even college football. I wouldn't call it a "guilty pleasure" but I'm definitely conflicted about it.
When our son was born there were two things that Mrs.Z was adamant about: he must go to college and he musn't play football. Even before all the stuff about concussions came out it was obvious that football was a dangerous sport. People get hurt. I have a cousin my age who has suffered all his life with a bad knee that he got playing high school football 45 years ago. Since then kids have been getting bigger, faster and stronger to the point where you've got to wonder if football should be played at all. PBS' Frontline had a couple of good programs about this. Football High aired in 2011 and covered the health risks of high school football and League of Denial from 2013 was about the scandal of brain damage among NFL players. I like excellence; a great run, a circus catch, a perfectly thrown ball but, sheesh, couldn't they somehow make football less suicidal ? Then there's the commercialization, which I detest. Cities using taxpayer dollars to build stadiums for billionaire team owners ? Where's the outrage ? Or ridiculous college bowl games. I mentioned that I might watch a bowl game on TV but I won't buy a ticket. Apparently there are many like me. We are approaching the point where ticket sales are irrelevant. If the ad revenue is right, we may soon see televised bowl games in empty stadiums. There's something perverted about that. And speaking of perversion, for the last few cycles, in non-presidential years, more people watch the Super Bowl than vote. There's definitely something wrong there. What are they thinking ?
But, what the Hell. I'll tune in to listen to my Arizona Wildcats' first game and no doubt many more. I may have an NFL game on the box some Sunday afternoons and I may watch the BCS Championship, even catch some of the Stupor Bowl if I'm home. So that's it for this Tuesday morning. Anybody got any cool links to share, any new Meet-Ups in the works and ...

The entire state of Colorado has almost 50,000 subscribers to our Daily Kos emails. We can't wait to tap into that more. We've got a lot of organizing ahead of us for Colorado. Leaders, please step up!
We've declared this road trip a great success and look forward to doing some more around the country. It's important to unite entire states in addition to cities and towns. I hope you'll contribute in some way to this effort.
