A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do You watch PBS ?
I do, a little bit. I don't watch much TV, certainly less than the average American's 4 hours a day, but most of what I do watch is PBS. There are a couple of good cooking shows I watch now and then. They're usually on in the other room in the evenings. Frontline is usually pretty good and there are some good documentaries on POV and Independent Lens. I used to watch The News Hour every night. They're just Neoliberal pimps these days, no better than the commercial networks. Besides, I've got other sources for my evening news. I have zero respect for NOVA, their much-acclaimed science series. Major funding for NOVA is provided by David H. Koch. The fact that Koch is fossil-fuel baron, a climate change denier and a right-wing whack-job might help to explain why NOVA's coverage of our planet's worsening climate change disaster has been scarce to non-existent.
What got me thinking about PBS was an article I saw at Gawker: Sesame Street Teaches Poor Kids: Educational TV Isn't for You Anymore. The gist of the article is that Sesame Street will no longer be broadcast free, over-the-air, but will instead be offered, for a price, by HBO. Yes, Sesame Street is now a public-private partnership. We have for-profit prisons in Arizona. I suppose those are public-private partnerships. The thing about these arrangements is that one partner is greedy and dishonest and the other partner always ends up paying too much and receiving too little. I leave it to the reader to sort out which is which.
To me, the issue is not just the privatization of Sesame Street. That might turn out to be a good thing. The real issue is educational television in general, the whole enterprise. It's what John Kenneth Galbraith might call an innocent fraud.* Maybe, years and years ago, the people who invented educational TV actually believed in it. I hope so. But the results are in and it turns out that educational TV has exactly the opposite of its intended effect. Television doesn't make kids smarter, it makes them dumber. It doesn't make them do better in school, it makes them do worse. Maybe it makes busy parents feel better about using the electronic babysitter, but think about it. Television doesn't teach kids to read, books do. Television teaches kids to stare at a screen, passively. It rewires their little brains so that they expect more visual stimulation than they will get in their 1st grade classrooms. There's a name for this rewiring. It's called ADHD and there's a drug for it, Ritalin. Ritalin is a stimulant. It calms kids down because it mimics the stimulation that they are used to getting from TV.
I hope Sesame Street makes a lot of money for somebody but I'm glad I didn't sit my kid down in front of it and I wouldn't recommend it to new parents. How 'bout you, CUA-ers, anybody planning a Meet-Up, got any links to share and ...

The entire state of Colorado has almost 50,000 subscribers to our Daily Kos emails. We can't wait to tap into that more. We've got a lot of organizing ahead of us for Colorado. Leaders, please step up!
We've declared this road trip a great success and look forward to doing some more around the country. It's important to unite entire states in addition to cities and towns. I hope you'll contribute in some way to this effort.
