Two rounds of questions down, up to two rounds to go. What exactly are we going to learn in the final two rounds of questions? It's a valid question, but consider how little we've learned through the first two. Are Republicans really saving their bombshell questions for the end of the day?
Here's hoping they conclude that going all the way to four rounds of questions is to no one's benefit and cut things short. Because frankly, the chance that Clinton will get tired and gaffe is probably smaller than the chance that one of the Republicans will get tired and gaffe.
You can watch a live stream of the hearing here.
Previous coverage of the hearing can be found here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.
3:35 PM PT (Barbara Morrill): Roskam has a theory. That Clinton took a "victory lap" after Qaddafi was ousted and then got bored and tuned out Libya. A "mission accomplished" moment (wonder if he knows what he just said there) as it were. So his theory is, she wouldn't approve of more security for Benghazi because it would ruin her victory lap. So she let them die, apparently.
3:45 PM PT (Barbara Morrill): Roskam concluded by ripping a piece of paper (hey, when you don't have a snowball, you have to improvise) and decided to read a statement of what he thought Clinton should have said about Ambassador Stevens ... all in his outdoor voice.
4:06 PM PT: Rep. Brooks first wants Clinton to take responsibility for the CIA annex in Benghazi (asked on CNN during the last break: why isn't the committee all over the CIA about this?) and then wants to know why Clinton hasn't signed a waiver to a diplomatic security law that, Clinton points out, doesn't require waivers for facilities like the one in Benghazi.
Then Brooks complains that Benghazi was dangerous (Clinton points out the U.S. has diplomatic facilities in lots of dangerous places) and hectors Clinton for ... not being warm and nurturing enough? Or something?
4:18 PM PT (Barbara Morrill): Roby wants to know if Clinton was home alone all night after she returned home the night of the attack. Clinton bursts out laughing. Roby has a sad.
4:26 PM PT (Barbara Morrill): Roby continues with a meandering and frankly, a weird line of questioning about ... sorry, she lost me.
4:30 PM PT: Rep. Roby embarks on a long series of questions to pin Clinton down as not hard working enough and as disengaged from what was happening. Except that what she's showing is that Clinton didn't micromanage and get in the way of operational staff doing their jobs. Why didn't Clinton talk to Secretary of Defense Panetta right away? Because she knew the staff were already doing everything they could, doing the right things, and that having that conversation wouldn't actually improve results. Why didn't Clinton talk to the survivors of the attack right away? Because the FBI wanted to talk to them first; Clinton stayed in contact with the people caring for the survivors and then talked to the survivors when it wouldn't interfere with an investigation. Roby really wants to make Clinton look like a heartless bitch, but it's coming at the end of a long, long day in which Clinton has shown her heart.
