It was scary when Republican liar John James was trailing Senator Gary Peters (D-Michigan) by a percentage point, putting him well within the margin of error. We worried about an “enthusiasm gap” between Biden voters and Peters voters. Both the Peters and James campaigns used the poll for fundraising appeals.
Now that frightening poll is seen as the result of two polls from Republican pollster Trafalgar skewing the numbers in favor of James, our own David Jarman explained. New polls released today give Peters a more comfortable margin. Ken Haddad for WDIV:
Michigan Democratic U.S. Senator Gary Peters has increased his lead over Republican challenger John James heading into the final stretch of the 2020 election, a new WDIV/Detroit News poll shows.
The race for the U.S. Senate seat in Michigan has been a tight one, with previous WDIV/Detroit News polls showing the race in the margin of error - or just outside of it.
Since the early October survey, there has a been a major shift in the race. Gary Peters now leads John James by a margin of 48.4%-38.8%, with 8.7% of voters remaining undecided. Peters leads by 9.6%, virtually matching Biden’s percentage of 49.3.%. At 38.8%, James trails Trump’s 41.6% by 2.8% points.
Still, we shouldn’t be complacent. We can’t breathe easy until the votes are counted, Trump leaves the White House for good and Peters returns to the Senate with more Democrat colleagues.
According to the poll, “Peters is winning 91.3% of Biden voters,” which sounds about right, “and 6.4% of Trump voters.” I have my suspicion as to the reason for the latter, but I think maybe I should keep that to myself for now.
Also, “James is winning 87.0% of Trump voters,” which is quite unsurprising, “and 2.4% of Biden voters.” The latter could be “Lincoln Project-type” voters who understand that Trump is the absolute worst, but still want a Republican majority in the Senate and the supposedly nonpartisan Supreme Court.
But if President Biden is to have any chance to really fix all the havoc wreaked by Trump and prevent another dictator wannabe from ever again rising to power, he’s going to need a Democratic majority in the Senate, and he’s going to need to undo Republican court-packing.
Some of those 2.4% Biden voters voting for James might be falling for James’s deceitful ads. I think WDIV, the Detroit NBC affiliate, should stop running those ads, give James a refund and Peters an apology.
There could even be voting based on looks, with some people deciding that James is much better looking than Peters. I wouldn’t dispute that. Maybe James should play a senator on a TV show. Let Peters do the actual work of being a senator, like he has been already with his almost perfect roll call vote attendance record.
There is a black man who deserves to unseat a white incumbent. His name is Jaime Harrison, but I can’t vote for him because I don’t live in South Carolina. If I did, I’d be like, hell yeah, let’s get rid of Senator Lindsey Graham (R).

P. S. For the Michigan Supreme Court, vote for Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack to stay on the state’s highest court, and for Elizabeth Welch to join her there. Maybe President Biden should nominate McCormack for Associate Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court.
In such an eventuality, either Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) or hypothetically Gov. Garlin Gilchrist (D) would get to name McCormack’s replacement on the state court. That replacement would later have to run to stay on the state court...
But I’m getting ahead of myself here. If you’re a Michigan voter and you haven’t voted yet, vote today or vote this week, so that on Election Day there’s no doubt who won Michigan’s sixteen Electoral College votes.
