A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Good morning Kogs and Kossacks in Dailykosland!
Merry Monday and welcome to the working week.
What is your favorite non-chocolate candy?
I was that rare child that did not particularly care for chocolate. I didn't dislike chocolate, I just didn't know what all the fuss was about. There was a candy dish in our living room that was always full of M&Ms and Hershey's Kisses and other milk chocolate candies, but it didn't call out to me.
I could take or leave chocolate but from the start I was crazy about vanilla. One of my fondest childhood candy memories is of Bonomo Turkish Taffy. Put it in the freezer and then slap it on the floor to break it into enough parts to share with all your friends. If you were the sharing type. I wasn't. Charleston Chew is similar, but I didn't have a Charleston Chew until I was in my 30s. Amazingly, the different shape of the candy bar made it a less enjoyable experience.
Some of my favorite candies are relatively bland. What is in Necco wafers, anyway? And Conversation Hearts don't have much flavor either. I didn't know until I drafted this diary that they were made by the same company. I wonder if it is the same base made into different shapes. Necco also made Canada Mints, and I loved those. The peppermint ones, not the wintergreen. Wintergreen—Ick!
Those little peppermint starburst candies were my favorite thing. I enjoyed lingering over a roll of Pep O Mint LifeSavers or a box of Canada Mints, and as an adult, I almost always have a box of Altoids within easy reach.
The sharpness of peppermint is so refreshing, and I love the bite of sour candy too. Everyone else can have the chocolate bunnies at Easter time—I want the special SweeTarts shaped like "Chicks, Ducks and Bunnies" that they only put out for a few weeks at that time of year. Each one is the size of three or four regular sized SweeTarts, and unfortunately I can eat them by the handful. Do they still make pixy stix? I could eat a whole box of those with no problem. Is anyone making a good strong cinnamon chewing gum anymore?
My grandfather was fond of peanut brittle and through him I came to love all kinds of nut brittle and plain butter toffee. A lot of my non-chocolate candy favorites contain nuts, like pecan nougat logs, PayDay bars, and Squirrel Nut Zippers (also, amazingly, made by Necco). When I went to the movies the big treat was Jordan Almonds--they were always the most expensive candy in the theatre.
I realize looking at this that I seem like a total sugar addict because of all these candy favorites, but in those days I was a normal size and a normal eater. I didn't binge on candy, even at Hallowe'en. When I had it, I enjoyed it thoroughly. When I didn't have it, I didn't crave it. And when it was around, one or two small pieces were enough for me. Even now, I have no problem enjoying candy and sweets in small amounts and in moderation. I go without sweets for long periods of time with no problem. My binge temptations are all about grease and salt...
Are there non-chocolate candy tastes that appeal to you? Do you like them better than chocolate candy, or not as much? Can you enjoy just a little bit of it and stop? Or maybe you don't have a sweet tooth at all?
What's your favorite non-chocolate candy?

by John Crapper ♥ for Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks
Organizer John Crapper completed another meet-up, from his agenda:
Next, I updated the group on our efforts to identify campaigns we would like to assist in the upcoming elections. There are three that have been under active discussion but nothing has been firmly decided. We all agreed it was important to pick races that would help Washington Democrats regain control of the Senate.
Next, I asked for ideas, suggestions and assistance identifying future guest speakers. In connection with that I urged all to invite their friends to become Kossacks and join us to enhance our clout.
Longtime Kossack
LarisaW, President of
Progressive Radio Northwest (PRNW), was in attendance. She is leading an effort to bring back progressive radio to the NW.
