Many other women, including Carly Fiorina, Marlee Matlin, Elizabeth Warren, Kristen Gillibrand, Connie Chung, Omarosa Manigault Newman and Hillary Clinton have also been publicly insulted by Trump but in ways that were not unambiguously sexual. There are also instances with women that are not easily classified, like when Trump poured a glass of wine down Marie Brenner’s back, or when, according to Michael Wolff, he privately called Sally Yates the C word, but in her absence. Then there’s the allegation that he was so hostile towards a sixteen-year-old model with whom he was playing tennis that he reduced her to tears. Also, a further twenty women filed sexual discrimination lawsuits against Trump’s companies.
I haven’t included the allegation made in All the President’s Women that Trump had sex with a prostitute and a teen-ager because I do not think the source is trustworthy enough, unless further corroborated in the future. Also, Alva Johnson claims Trump, “Grabbed her hand and kissed her on the lips outside a rally in Tampa in August 2016”. However, film of the event only shows Trump giving her a peck on the cheek, so I have not counted this accusation.
According to the Guardian, “David Cay Johnston, a Pulitzer prize winner and a Trump biographer, is quoted as saying that several ‘name-brand’ women had pregnancies and abortions courtesy of Trump.”
Why do “family values” conservatives continue to accept and support such a man? Apparently, “family values” for them is simply a code for patriarchy. When a powerful man misuses his position to assert his sexual will against the wishes of others, patriarchy itself is reinforced even as the bonds of trust, affection and mutual respect that hold healthy romantic relationships together are contemptuously violated.
Trump’s treatment of women is symptomatic of the way he interacts with all people. He seems to lack any meaningful sense of empathy. He is not a complete man. Can a narcissist ever be trusted as a statesman? Can a sociopath ever understand the heart of a true patriot? It is not only natural but imperative to ask such questions, regardless of one’s political standpoint.
