Welcome to the odd and whimsical poetery of the Peeps related to holidaze! Let’s investigate what today is, because we need all the holidays we can celebrate, right?
Today is many holidays! So I will pick out a couple, and you can click the link above if you’re curious about the rest. This is an open thread, so please feel free to add your favorite illustrated pomes for today in the Comments!
The Feast of the Ass was a Christian feast during medieval times, which was mainly celebrated in France. It celebrated all of the donkeys of the Bible, especially the one that was believed to have brought Jesus and his family into Egypt after Jesus' birth, during what is known as the Flight into Egypt. At that time, the family was fleeing the killing of young boys by Herod the Great. Another example of a donkey in the Bible is the one that Jesus rode on into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. It is also believed that a donkey was in the stable in which Jesus was born. First celebrated during the eleventh century, the holiday is connected to the Feast of Fools, and was inspired by the pagan Roman festival Cervulus….
At first, I could not find a whimsical pome for this one. Most donkey pomes for some reason are very serious! But strawbale rose to the challenge and even found one from our friend Ogden!
The jackass wild
by Ogden Nash
Have you heard the song of the jackass wild,
Which is also called the onager?
It sounds like the laugh of an idiot child,
Or a cool cat on the harmonager.
But do not sneer at the jackass wild,
There's method in his heehaw.
For in dulcet tones and accents mild,
The jenny-ass answers, "shee-haw."
And here’s a lovely photo:
National Dress Up Your Pet Day is a day for people to dress up their pets, and the larger goal of the day is to raise awareness for pet adoption. The day was founded by Colleen Paige, who also started holidays such as National Dog Day and National Cat Day. She has said that all of her holidays "have the underlying goal to help save lives and give homeless animals as much exposure as possible."
[Of course, don’t be an ass! Only dress up your pets if they enjoy it. Otherwise, Photoshop is your pet’s friend!]

I don’t want to go as a ballerina
For National Dress Up Your Pet Day
Fine, I’ll go as a ballerina
If you don’t take a photo of me
Fine, you can take one photo of me
If you don’t post it on Facebook
Fine, you can post it on Facebook
If you don’t also post it on Instagram and Twitter
Fine, you can also post it on Instagram and Twitter
If you don’t hashtag it #NationalDressUpYourPetDay
Fine, you can hashtag it #NationalDressUpYourPetDay
If you let me chew all your favorite pairs of shoes
And all your favorite pairs of pants
So that now both you and I
Will never play dress-up again.
