Very few Democrats show teachers’ unions the love and respect they deserve. Obama (who I adore) didn’t stand behind them. Cuomo (who has grown on me) doesn’t. And forget about the Republicans — they have been true enemies of teachers’ unions.
But that is a heartbreaking truth, because not only are teachers essential for the wellbeing of our children, teachers, schools, and nation but their union is one of the last strong unions left. If we lose it, we stand to lose organized labor.
Biden was endorsed by the two largest teachers union back in March.
In an address to delegates of the nation's largest teachers' union, Biden promised that if he is elected president, teachers will have more say in how education decisions are made.
"You will never find in American history a president who is more teacher-centric or more supportive of teachers than me," Biden told National Education Association delegates on July 3. The presumptive Democratic nominee spoke via webcam during the NEA's annual Representative Assembly, which is virtual this year.
"This is going to be a teacher-oriented Department of Education, and it's not going to come from the top down—it's going to come from the teachers up," he said.
The former vice president has previously pledged to nominate a former teacher to the position of U.S. Secretary of Education if elected. Biden told educators that they are the "most important profession" and deserve more respect.
"Education should be put more in the hands of educators," he said. "You should have more input on what you teach, how you teach it, and when you teach it. You are the ones in the classroom, you should have more input."
Another reason to love this is the amount that the WSJ hates it. Their headline was Joe Biden Bows to the Teachers Unions
Here’s a place Joe Biden differs from his old boss: President Obama had fraught relations with the teachers unions, including the National Education Association, which in 2014 called (unsuccessfully) for the resignation of Education Secretary Arne Duncan.
Mr. Biden, seeking the NEA’s endorsement at a virtual assembly on Friday, pledged his fealty to the union, noting that his wife, Jill, is a member. “When we win this election, we’re going to get the support you need and the respect you deserve,” Mr. Biden said.
Suck it WSJ.
Also in line for sucking it? the ultra right wing American Center for Law and Justice which also hates Biden’s support of the teacher’s unions
Although the Obama Administration increased federal funds for charter schools and the share of public school students who attended charter schools rose to 6% from 1% during the period from 2000 to 2017, and while the number of students attending private schools continues to plummet, non-charter public schools continue to fail the most vulnerable among us.
There is another name for non-charter public schools — PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Public education is the backbone of the American dream and assholes like these hate it. They want all the $$ funneled to charter schools run by corporations and to private religious schools.
Finally the editorial board of Bloomberg is also furious that we might have a president who will actually support teachers and solid PUBLIC education.
Frankly, no Democratic president (or Governor) has been willing to stand up for teachers and public education.
This is a bold move by Biden and it is the right move.
Biden will stand up for public education.
Joe Biden will support the teachers’ unions. That is good for teachers, good for students, good for unions, and good for America.
Joe Biden will be a great president.
