In 1896 Swedish-Finn August Erickson built the three-story Louvre Saloon in Astoria, Oregon as a pleasure palace for the discriminating man. The new Louvre Saloon in the Heritage Museum in Astoria includes the original backbar, roulette table, card table, nickelodeon, and stained glass.
According to the museum:
“Without equal anywhere in the Northwest at its opening, the entire building was a marvel of artistic decoration. The fresco work in flowers, scrolls, landscapes and the fine cared oak woodwork were an inspired combination.”
The glory days of the Louvre Saloon ended with prohibition and the building was destroyed in the 1930s. Many of the Saloon’s furnishings found their way to the Clatsop County Historical Society.
