Hymn for Today
(To the tune of The Old Rugged Cross)
In the minds of today stands an old bigotry
the cause of great suffering and shame;
and I hate bigotry, which did harden my heart,
to a world of my brothers in pain.
(Chorus)
So I'll cherish all reason and truth,
and bigotry at last I'll lay down
I'll not cling to my old bigotry,
But exchange it for thought that is sound.
Oh my old bigotry, so toxic to this world
had such a hold on me;
for if God loves some but not all;
then some men have no right to be free.
(Chorus)
In that old bigotry, so confident was I,
so blind that I just could not see;
I accepted that others would suffer and die
rather than challenge my certainty.
(Chorus)
From that old bigotry, I'll forever be free
none my shame or reproach ever bare,
And I hope that one day, not far away,
for a world of peace and justice to share
(Chorus)
