I just received a solicitation from the CEO of amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research) Kevin Frost asking for a donation to support a "grassroots advocacy effort" to fight the Congressional efforts to curtail syringe exchange programs. This is an important cause and I fully support their efforts.

But in these days of tightening budgets (here at home and throughout the country) whenever I get this sort of request I check into how much the top executives at the organization are pulling in. My feeling is that as people as HIV/AIDS here in California are losing their ADAP benefits which pay for their life-saving medication, some of these individuals might be helped by existing organizations such as amfAR if they have the means to do so.

After checking into the amfAR financials I was truly astounded.

I support the activities of Fred Karger and Californian’s Against Hate who are working to overturn the impact of the passage of Prop 8 here in California. But their success reminds me of the dog chasing the car and thinking of what he is going to do when he actually catches it.

The LGBT community has proven that it can be successful in identifying and publicizing individuals and organizations that are acting against our best interests. But we do not always think about the overall process in which these people can be brought over to our side.

Steve Schmidt recently spoke about how Religion Could Kill the Republican Party. He also talked about how the GOP should embrace same-sex marriage. This is all good news, especially from someone inside and should have the ears of more Republicans than most of the bloggers on TheDailyKos.com.

Now I am seeing the response and it brings up the question as to how do we welcome and encourage this sort of behavior.

Over the past few days and weeks the media has been given Bush 43 and his cohorts a chance to create a revisionist view of the past 8 years. All I can say is go, just go.

I don't want to hear any more about Bush's last anything: a ride on Air Force One to celebrate his daddy, his last press conference, his last trip to Camp David, his farewell address to the country, or Barney's last dump on the White House lawn.

I just want it to be over.

While donuts don't mail too easily this is actually better because it is possible to upload an image to be put on the Dunkin Donut card. Just think if a ton of these cards showed up at Saddleback Church with the pictures of gay couples, partners, friends, and family. That would give him a message that he isn't the only one that gives donuts out.

And something tells me he likes donuts.

Ok, maybe I don't get a say since I don't live in New York, but I would like to have her as my Senator.

Political experience is overrated. The crowd that Bush 43 surrounded himself with 8 years ago was overloaded with experience, and see where that got us. While I wouldn't pick just anyone off the street - or anyone in my immediate family for that matter - to fill the role of US Senator, I like the idea of bringing in smart people who haven't spent their lives in political office.

Think about it. Who has benefited the most from the way Detroit has sold us on the SUV and other gas-guzzling cars and trucks. Easy. It is the people who were selling us the gas.

Why should the taxpayers be asked to fund this type of activity when the oil companies are sitting on record profits? Last year alone, the top ten oil companies earned profits of over $127 billion dollars. And how much are the big three asking for now? $34 billion. I think we should send them to Houston instead of Washington.

I am not sure that the vote within the Democratic Congress for allowing Joe Lieberman to retain his chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee was public or not so I couldn't see how you voted.

If you voted to allow him to keep that position, you are misreading the will of the people. We voted earlier this month for change, real change. There was an opportunity to make an improvement in the Senate leadership by replacing Lieberman with someone who better reflects what we want out of the Senate. The opportunity was lost.

The spin is that we should be forward thinking and not focused on the past. I am thinking of the future, and I don't want Joe Lieberman to have any part in how this country protects itself. You can do better than this, and we expect you to.

The new Obama administration is going to be placing a higher priority on service than we have seen in a long time. This is a good thing. One of the most successful programs has been the Peace Corps.

On TellBarack.org (http://tellbarack.org/?page_id=635)we have created a video asking Barack to support the Peace Corps:

Improving the Peace Corps doesn't need to be at the top of the list of things for Obama to be doing at first. But it will be an emphasis on service - and what we can do to change America - that will make his Presidency unique and successful.

Tell Barack – Get Involved

We have created a site called Tell Barack at http://www.tellbarack.org. The site is designed to provide visitors the opportunity to let Obama know what we would like him to do now that he is the President-elect. Everyone can provide their input by filling out surveys, leaving comments, composing an email message, and even creating a video to be shown on TellBarack.org.

The second goal of the site is to provide information on where everyone can get involved. Now that Barack is headed to the White House, he needs everyone to get involved in the causes you support. He can’t do it alone. There are links to various groups and organizations which provide volunteer opportunities. If you have information on other opportunities to get involved, we want to hear about them so we can include them for all of our visitors.

We are excited to start to work to change America!

Tell Barack. A simple idea. When Barack Obama is sworn in as President of the United States on January 20, 2009 he has a big job ahead of him. He needs our help.

We need to tell him what we want him to do. Barack Obama would be the first one to tell us that he works for us - the citizens of the United States. And it is our job to take time to let him know what we him to do.

Why is this important?

It is not just our RIGHT to tell our leaders what we want them to do, it is our DUTY. To a certain degree Americans want to lay back and let someone else do the work - and then complain about it when it doesn't turn out the way we want.

Are we just lazy? Maybe. But we are also trusting. Trusting that the people we put into office will do the right thing. If we haven't learned anything in the past 8 years of the Bush administration, it is clear that they are not to be trusted.

We have created a web site called Tell Barack at http://tellbarack.org. It provides a forum for people to "Tell Barack" what they want him to do. But the second - and maybe more important goal - is to give everyone the chance to get involved to change America.
