ok...are you ready?
After 20 diaries,
thousands of comments,
and more work than I had hoped, we are all finished.
Pie charts galore ahead...mmm....pie...
Below you will find each and every winner revealed, and some commentary that nobody will read by yours truly. Details are included, with an asterisk.
++++
Update: For dialups & others: Go directly to the polling place for results:
http://polldaddy.com/...
(Yeah, I know you have skipped over this and are already below looking at the purdy pikshurs to see if you won, but I'm going to type a bit more anyway...)
We have seen two kOscars voting diaries make the rec list but, ironically(?), neither of them were by the organizers. Almost every one of the diaries by PDNC and me just barely missed the rec list. This is clear from the fact that they so often ended up higher in the High Impact Diaries than many other diaries that were Recommended.
So, if you are here, or if you participated in the past, consider the fact that some people who want to see the results aren't that versed in how to use the search function.
As for the asterisk mentioned above in the intro.
Below is an illustration about the issue that I try to mitigate in revealing the results of the polls:
It is important to look at the bright side/silver linings.
The adage It's an honor just to be nominated will be tested today with 90+% of you.
Consider this:
In two of the 3 categories where I was affiliated with a nomination, I came in last. But the upside is that when going against Diary Rescue, Top Comments, and jotter's High Impact Diaries, ten people actually voted for Welcome New Users!
(Congrats, Diary Rescue!)
It sure makes it seem better when you look at it that way, IMO. I mean, jotter is a frickin superhero, and ten people voted for a little monthly series that was MIA for much of the year. Ten people actually burned their only vote for it over those other awesome nominees! Or at least used a sockpuppet's vote for it, anyway.
The point of all this is that most people may not have skin as tough as smileycreek and I have {sniff, sniff} about getting trashed humiliated badly beaten in their respective category.
I have taken pains to keep only those whose voting results are the most triumphant visible here in the diary. If you are dying to know exactly how many votes you or your favorite series or diary received, all results have been un-hidden at the polling place. Each poll is linked in the category title.
But be forewarned: If it is not visible here, the results may be disappointing.
Finally, (I know, blah blah blah)
Victim of the System?
At least once twice thrice a few times, there was the unfortunate scenario of someone going up against himself or herself.
If you were one of the few (Sara R, JeffLieber, Angry Mouse, etc.?) who was nominated twice in the same category, perhaps next time we will try to be more attentive to the problems that may present.
.
h/t ridemybike for the award statue idea. Although upon closer inspection, it looks a bit more like one of JeffLieber's "statues"...

1. Political
The runaway winner for best commenter about all things political.
We thank you for reading and remarking in our diaries. We will try to also accept your input when your insight suggests we are not quite right, as well.
Dallasdoc
2. Original Artwork or Snark:
This one was neck and neck the whole way. One of the very tightest races, for sure.
rserven
3. Adapted Artwork or Snark:
This one was a tough battle.
For a long time, JnH was in the lead. But the power of C & J overwhelmed.
Bill in Portland Maine
I gotta give some mad props to #2 here. It is very tough to go up against one of the site's most cherished names who also appears on the front page 5 days/week.
So to JekyllnHyde, keep your chin up!
You fared very, very well. Blame the people who didn't think about this stuff beforehand.
This cartoon (not originally found in one of your diaries or comments, surprisingly) is for you.
4. Action Faction:
This was one of the tightest races of all from the very start.
Three women emerged early on and were neck & neck all the way. (Interestingly, it appears that every one most of the nominees in this category are women. Are women just more into action than men? Hmmm...)
Congrats to the woman who prevailed!

5. Comment of the Year:

I gotta give some mad props to #2 here.

1. Community Forum:
Another solid win. At very few points was this one ever in doubt.
Black Kos
2. DK Community Service:
Mentioned above. A huge triumph for Diary Rescue. There were some close runners-up with Sara R's quilt efforts and jotter's heroic daily eight times per week High Impact Diaries. But in the end, the tireless work of the Rescue Rangers was too much goodness to go unrewarded here.
Diary Rescue
If you are a Rescue Ranger, take a bow! (But when you hear the music start to play, wrap up your speech tout suite.)
3. World Community Service:
We have two similar nominees in that they both support the troops.
Who knew DFH libruls cared about such things?
The heart-wrenching tales of the soldiers that have died in battle ended up winning.
IGTNT
4. Nonpolitical:
The only one that is a daily feature. A break from our pie fights, falme wars, and endless nattering. And they make us laugh.
The Pootie Diaries
By the way...shorthand is commonly used in this series. Pootie lovers know what these terms normally refer to....
We have CATs & NOMs
And the crucial and inevitable sub-category and winner:
Pootie of the Year:
Loki (also known as Debbie in ME's cat owner).
Loki was unopposed. But let's be honest, he would have won regardless because "he's so damned beautiful".
5. Environmental:
This was getting tighter all the time. Saturday Garden Blogging may have just ran out of time to take over the lead.
DK GreenRoots
6. FrontPage:
Cheers and Jeers has it all--wit, intelligence, community spirit, sympathy and empathy. Bill is an exceptional talent and a rare human being and we all love him! We care about our fellow Kossacks and our country.

This category lead the way in terms of number of votes. ( Front Page = 523 ) Was there ever much doubt about this one?
Cheers and Jeers
Congrats to Bill et. al., or I guess we should instead say
Cheers to Cheers and Jeers!
7. Political or News:
Political or News
From the onset, this was a hotly contested race. This category came in 2nd in number of votes cast. (Political or News = 515 )
In the end, a reclist mainstay from the early months of 2009 surged ahead of others like dengre and OND who both held the lead for a period of time. Kos would be pleased, or I am the only one who looks at which diaries he recs?
WineRev's MN Senate Recount
8. Educational:
This race was tremendous. Such a tight bunch at the top. The gap between 1st and 5th was as smaller than any other category.
What are you reading?
9. History:
Was it a category name issue? Perhaps.
The winner turned out to have a series named after the category, or was it the other way around?
Congrats to Unitary Moonbat for all the great work on the lovely Sunday Night teaching series.

3. Front Pager of the Year
This is one of the hardest for me. The competition for this one is intense. I could easily vote "All of the above."

This one was a tad lopsided...
And does anyone else find it amusing that kos wasn't even nominated? LOL

All hail the overlord and champion.

4. Best Good Works diary
One of the best people here gets an award for her kindness. It seems appropriate to me. But there were many people who also helped with this series. (Let's hope we hear their names in the acceptance speech.)

5. Snark Diary of the Year
Another very tight race. The winner was in the lead from the beginning. I can't help but wonder if being easy to read helped it get votes from people in a rush. It's a busy era this 2010 world of ours.

7. Best Visual Diary - Photo or Video
This one was never close. I was surprised, and few love Al more than I. He's one of but a handful of diarists to whom I have been subscribed for years.
We miss Al.
I hope he returns triumphantly soon.

8. Best Teaching Diary
Another win for the Moonbat.
Congrats!

9. Best Investigative Diary
Not long after his GBCW and subsequent return a few weeks later, we have a triumph by the man who has been virtually Mister Investigative Diary in years past.
Jane Hamsher has let her hatred trump her judgment. I know Grover Norquist and I have followed the way that he works too closely to let anybody try and justify this betrayal to me with spin and "hey, look over there" arguments. I’m not buying it and it does not justify this alliance with Norquist.
Grover Norquist is our ally? Are you f@%&ing kidding me! by dengre
10. Hunter Award for Rant of the Year
This one was never really that close. The race ended up a 4-way battle for 2nd place, and was virtually a 4-way tie for 2nd in the end. (Four diaries with 17% or 16% the vote.)
From the nominator:
Rant of the Year: (5+ / 0-)
This is a standout articulation of the argument that the progressive coalition cannot stand with teabaggers in order to attack albeit imperfect Dems. It predated later Research 2000 polling which bore out the irrationality and nefarious motivations of those attracted to that movement. This is an excellent example of the blogosphere self-correcting and rejecting poor ideas rather than allowing them to proceed due to group think and echo chamber analysis.
This is IMO the best rant of the year, topped only by Hunter's masterpiece warning Dems against watering down HCR, although sadly that came to pass.

Turns out this is the second anti-Hamsher diary to win in its category, BTW.

11. Best Non-political Diary
I got to meet this writer this week, and she was a pleasure to talk to. It is a pleasure to announce that hers is the winner for Best Non-political Diary of 2009.

1. Diary of the Year
This one was never really in doubt. Alan Grayson made a late surge to get into 2nd place, but the diary that won was in 1st place all the way.
From the update of the winning diary:
But we also have the opportunity to change our own lives. Life is a glorious, wonderful thing. There is so much beauty and awe in this world. Please, whatever you do politically, remember to find the joy in your life. It's there, and it is in your control to reach it. Grab hold of it and never let go. And if you do, it doesn't matter when you die. Yours will have been a life well lived.
It is a bittersweet award at best. It's my duty to announce the posthumous winner.

2. Diarist of the Year
The winner was a rec list mainstay that covered a wide variety of subjects. Here is a search that will get you started on some of his best work from 2009.
Titles such as
They Hate Him Because He Is "Black"
For Lack Of Water, U.S. Troops In Iraq Vomiting, Fainting
Durbin on Congress: Banks "Own The Place"
andU.S. Soldier Killed Herself After Refusing To Torture
all came in a 30 day span.
It was a tough category with so many nominees that the votes were spread thin amongst them all. Someone suggested using instant runoff voting like those being used at this year's Oscars. Perhaps such a system can be used if we ever do this little meta-fest again. At very least I would propose making a higher threshold for nominees in the category. As it is, lots of people can proudly state that they were nominated for 2009 Diarist of the Year.
Congrats to each of them, especially to the winner -
Turkana
A screencap from Feb. 20 shows the older pie and the changes in the race since then. It was a tight race the whole way. (It also shows how much better the website was before they "upgraded" it.)
Last but not least...
Mad props to all who contributed to this effort.
Seneca Doane, wader, & LoE all wrote GOTV diaries, and cfk had the earlier rogue diaries in support. Thanks for your work!
PDNC, you helped more than I can say! Thank you!
And not least, all of the contributors in comments and recommends. Without you, this idea would never have gotten off the ground.
Perhaps I should be blaming you instead of thanking you.
:-p
Acceptance speeches in the comments should be 30 seconds or less.
Don't make me cut to commercial!
Others feel free to talk about how you were robbed, how the system sucks, how I suck, or whatever is on your mind. If enough people heed my request for recs, I guess this could also serve at a thread to dish about who people are wearing on the other red carpet.
