Vice President Joe Biden - Loving and Loved
Vice President Joe Biden is a key member of the Obama Administration and a tireless advocate for causes that are important to those of us who care about people and their lives. His long public career underscores his resolve to make government work for real people and make their real lives better.
As an adviser to President Barack Obama, his job included reminding the president of the historical context of important legislation such as the Affordable Care Act.
He has been a lifelong advocate for protecting women from domestic violence.
He is a steadfast defender of Social Security.
He does not just give lip service to veterans and their issues, he and his family live them, with a son who has served in Iraq, and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, promoting the causes of military families.
His work behind the scenes may have been instrumental in President Obama's shift on marriage equality as he has long advocated for LGBT rights.
But here is the Joe Biden we know and love, this man who speaks from his heart and shows how much he cares about his family and his country ... and us:
When I was a young kid in third grade, I remember my dad coming up the stairs in my grandpop's house where we were living, sitting at the end of my bed, and saying, Joey, I'm going to have to leave for a while. Gone — go down to Wilmington, Delaware, with Uncle Franks. They're good jobs down there, honey. And in a little while — a little while, I'll be able to send for you and mom and Jimmy and Val, and everything's going to be fine.
For the rest of our life, my sister and my brothers, for the rest of our life, dad never failed to remind us that a job is about a lot more than a paycheck. It's about — it's about your dignity. It's about respect. It's about your place in the community. It's about being able to look your child in the eye and say, honey, it's going to be OK, and mean it, and know it's true.
(Transcript of Vice President Joe Biden's Speech at the Democratic National Convention, August 2012)
When Joe Biden debates Mitt Romney's running mate Paul Ryan in the Vice Presidential Debate, I don't want him to eviscerate Paul Ryan or destroy Paul Ryan or send Paul Ryan home crying (well, okay, that one is tempting).
I want him to remind people of what Democrats stand for: taking care of each other; lifting each other up when we are down, emotionally and physically; fiercely protective of our military families, our seniors, our disadvantaged, our children and their future ... and the rights of our minorities. I want him to show everyone what is in his heart. Because when we show people what is in our hearts they will see what makes Democrats so completely different from Republicans and they will want to join us.
The big heart of a guy like Joe Biden ... another reason I Vote For Democrats and why you should too.
