A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Good morning Kogs and Kossacks in Dailykosland!
Merry Monday and welcome to the working week...
Do you still write thank you notes?
I do.
Real letters, on real paper, by snail mail in an envelope with a stamp. The whole nine yards.
That is, if I get around to it... :-D
I am such a terrible, terrible correspondent. I owe people thank you notes for things that happened years ago, and my thank you list for more recent things is so long I don't even want to think about it.
Every now and then I will send a handwritten letter. Sometimes I will type something. Most of the time I send a thank you card with a few handwritten words added in. I keep something I call "the card store" in my apartment and my office and when I see nice cards for any occasion I buy them and add them to the box. That way when I remember I need a card for any purpose at the last minute, I always have them handy.
I own boxes and boxes of thank you cards. So I have no excuse for all the thank yous I have not sent this year. In fact, guilt rose up in me so strongly when I was writing this diary that I stopped and wrote a thank you card for a family that gave me a beautiful and unexpected gift last week.
Sometimes I send ecards. It seems like the 21st century thing to do. I have a membership to Hallmark and Jacquie Lawson, and there are the snarky ones from someecards. But honestly, I can get so wrapped up in looking through various sites and previewing ecards, writing and
re-writing a personalized ecard message, that it takes longer to send an ecard than to get a paper card out of my "card store" and sign/address/stamp it. So the only time I send ecards is when time is of the essence—when I have forgotten a birthday or anniversary and it is the only way to get the message there on the right day.
One time when I had a lot of people to thank at once, I designed some thank you cards at Vistaprint with a message and my name printed inside. All I had to do was mail them out. It seemed kind of impersonal, but I justified it because I had so many people to thank. People seemed glad to get them, but somehow it didn't seem like enough. Now I have software on my computer that would let me design and create similar cards right from home if I bought the right kind of paper for my printer. I have seen those fill in the blank printable thank you cards on line, and thought they were only for children until I found some fill in the blank thank yous for wedding gifts. Do fill in the blank cards really teach children anything about the importance of thank you notes? Are they the last gasp of a dying tradition? I guess it's better than an email, and at least it is an acknowledgment that the gift was received.
Last but not least, a handful of times in my life I have sent a handwritten gratitude letter, with my best pen on my best paper, to a person who has had a significant effect on my life, just to explain that I am grateful for their influence, their friendship, their respect, or whatever reason I have to give thanks for the relationship.
This can be a very intensely rewarding experience for you to write and for the other person to receive. It is a wonderful present for a milestone birthday, significant anniversary, or other special occasion. If you put your personal truth into it, it will almost certainly be deeply cherished by the person you give it to. The gift of time and attention and self-expression is definitely the rarest and most precious gift of all.
Have you ever thought about thanking someone in writing in this way? For giving you a break, or a job, or a hand when you were in need? Or for just being there at a critical time? It may be someone you talk to every day, someone who knows in general that you are grateful, who knows generally that you hold him or her in high regard, but who might still be heart-struck to see it in print. Since handwritten letters are a rarity these days, and letter writing in general is a lost art, that kind of thank-you is something people cherish and save and read over and over again.
Are people still sending thank you cards, or did that go out of style decades ago? When was the last time you wrote a thank you note, or sent a thank you card? Is there an occasion so important that only a handwritten note will do? Is sending an e-card or a fill in the blank thank you card a cop out, or just the way things are in 2014?
Do you write thank you notes?

at President Obama's Personal Appearance in San Jose
by navajo ♥ for Silicon Valley Kossacks
Glen The Plumber alerted us about 350.org's notice that President Obama was speaking at a fundraiser in Silicon Valley on May 8th. 350.org rallied about 1500 people and the Silicon Valley Kossacks attended. Since it was so last minute only a few of us could attend but we brought our Daily Kos/Connect! Unite! Act! banner to remind President Obama that we helped elect him.
You can join the Silicon Valley Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to Glen The Plumber.

LeftOfYou and Expat Okie
by navajo ♥ for SFKossacks
On May 13th, the SFKossacks welcomed LeftOfYou and Expat Okie visiting from Chicago. They're here on a cruise up the West Coast after LeftOfYou retired last week from the US Postal system. What a pleasure to meet them and enjoy some quintessential San Francisco cuisine — Chinese deem sum.
We had a wonderful gathering and fantastic food. The bonus for Daily Kos is that LeftOfYou offered to lead a new group for St. Louis, Missouri when he moves there soon. I took him up on that. What a great day! We wished them well as they headed up the coast to Vancouver.

The Asheville Kossacks had another successful meet-up with excellent food supplied and prepared by Gordon20024. There's excellent food pr0n in the diary, btw. Steelergrrl brought tomato plants to give away. randallt handed out large Register to Vote signs along with information handouts on the new North Carolina voting law and a comprehensive guide to obtaining an ID for voting. Asheville Kossacks have been setting the example of GOTV for the rest of us. Kossack cultjake told an informative story on his new work on the precinct level of politics. randallt also made Asheville Kossack nametag lanyards for everyone. I'm impressed with all the ideas he's thought of to Connect, unite and activate his group.
