A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do You Like the Blues ?
I do. In fact, I listen to a little Blues every night. It may be my favorite form of music. I like Blues-based rock and Blues-based jazz. The Blues started out as folk music. Folk music is music that the people played and sang for each other before there was any such thing as recorded music. A good definition of a folk song is: if you know who wrote it, it's not a folk song. After the invention of recording technology, the first person to record a song often got credit for having written it even if variations of the song had been popular for generations before that. Some Blues songs do have actual authors, like the famous St. Louis Blues written by W.C. Handy.
The Blues is African-American music, and I mean African-U.S.A.-American. Other American countries have AA populations but they don't play the Blues. This probably has something to do with the Southern religious tradition. Almost all AA music has roots in the church experience. The Blues may have come from field chants and work songs but as it developed it became popular at social events, at picnics and in barrel houses and jook joints. Early Blues players were not specialists. They passed the hat and played whatever their audiences wanted to hear, could be hymns, folk songs or pop tunes. Some were amateurs who worked their farms and only played locally on weekends, others took up music full-time and traveled from town to town looking for gigs. One such itinerant Bluesman was Robert Johnson and no treatment of the Blues would be complete without mentioning the King of the Delta Blues. There are other regional styles of folk, or country, Blues. There's a Georgia style, a Piedmont style, a Memphis style and a Texas style, but the Delta style is the one that really took off. It's the style that went north, got electrified and was adopted by white musicians and audiences.
McKinley Morganfield moved from Mississippi to Chicago in 1943, part of the Great Migration of African-Americans from the rural, agricultural South to the urban, industrial North. He was already an accomplished player in the Delta style. In early recordings he sounds just like Robert Johnson or Charley Patton. Muddy moved to Chicago to make it big in music. He knew he was talented. While in Chicago he acquired an electric guitar. When the finger-picking and chording techniques from the Delta blues were played on an electric, through an amp, with maybe a little bit of distortion, the sound was magic. Muddy eventually gathered a band of All-Star Blues players and recorded for the legendary Chess Records. This was the birth of the Chicago Blues and it was the electrified Chicago style that eventually led to Rock and Roll.
Musically, the Blues have a distinctive chord structure, rhythm and lyric pattern. The lyrics are usually delivered in a pattern known as AAB. The short first phrase, the A, is repeated twice followed by a second, longer B phrase. In the standard 12-bar Blues the I, IV, and V chords are played in a pattern that sets up a tension and then releases it at the end of each verse. The rhythm is called a shuffle. Technically the term shuffle refers to the dum-ta-dum-ta-dum-ta-dum strum pattern but in most Blues songs the chord is altered slightly as well. The video below is a demonstration of the 12-bar form.
There are other less common blues forms; 16-bar, 8-bar and even 9-bar Blues. There is also something called a Boogie. A Boogie is really just one chord with a little figure to make it interesting. The most famous Boogie is John Lee Hooker's Boogie Chillun. It could be the single most stolen lick in Rock and Roll, you've heard it a million times.
My favorite Country Blues artist is Lightnin' Hopkins. He was from Texas and played the Texas style. Lightnin' was known for playful, improvised lyrics. I'll bet he was fun to have at a party. Here's a song called Short Haired Woman. I like the shuffle in this one and the stupid story.
Well there it is, a little about the Blues, what it is and where it came from, some Blues you can use on a Tuesday morning. I leave it to you to tell us if you like the Blues and maybe who's your favorite Blues or Blues-Rock artist.

at President Obama's Personal Appearance in San Jose
by navajo ♥ for Silicon Valley Kossacks
Glen The Plumber alerted us about 350.org's notice that President Obama was speaking at a fundraiser in Silicon Valley on May 8th. 350.org rallied about 1500 people and the Silicon Valley Kossacks attended. Since it was so last minute only a few of us could attend but we brought our Daily Kos/Connect! Unite! Act! banner to remind President Obama that we helped elect him.
You can join the Silicon Valley Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to Glen The Plumber.
SFKossacks Roll Out the Red Carpet for
LeftOfYou and Expat Okie
by navajo ♥ for SFKossacks
On May 13th, the SFKossacks welcomed LeftOfYou and Expat Okie visiting from Chicago. They're here on a cruise up the West Coast after LeftOfYou retired last week from the US Postal system. What a pleasure to meet them and enjoy some quintessential San Francisco cuisine — Chinese deem sum.
We had a wonderful gathering and fantastic food. The bonus for Daily Kos is that LeftOfYou offered to lead a new group for St. Louis, Missouri when he moves there soon. I took him up on that. What a great day! We wished them well as they headed up the coast to Vancouver.

by randallt ♥ for DKos Asheville
The Asheville Kossacks had another successful meet-up with excellent food supplied and prepared by Gordon20024. There's excellent food pr0n in the diary, btw. Steelergrrl brought tomato plants to give away. randallt handed out large Register to Vote signs along with information handouts on the new North Carolina voting law and a comprehensive guide to obtaining an ID for voting. Asheville Kossacks have been setting the example of GOTV for the rest of us. Kossack cultjake told an informative story on his new work on the precinct level of politics. randallt also made Asheville Kossack nametag lanyards for everyone. I'm impressed with all the ideas he's thought of to Connect, unite and activate his group.
