2thanks' quilt
Unit Zero has Stage III Metastatic Squamous Neck Cancer with Occult Primary and his treatment has included surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Here is his most recent diary about what it is like to undergo these treatments.
Unit Zero, in treatment
But there is a problem, at present. I had this note from his wife, jennifree2bme:
Unit Zero's at a pretty low point. He's been in the hospital since Monday night with fever and some sort of infection they haven't identified yet. His chemo is on hold; thankfully, he can still get his radiation treatments for now. His blood counts have tanked so they put him in isolation. This fever won't break. His throat feels like he swallowed razor blades.
This is a tense situation so we are putting a rush on this quilt...
Also, Unit Zero has five children, a $10,000 insurance deductible, and he can't work while he is so ill (reduction in income). The family has a YouCaring fundraiser page up, please help them if you can.
2thanks' quilt, showing the backing
What is a community quilt? It is a quilt bearing messages of love and support from you, transcribed by me with archival ink on muslin. My sister and I sew the messages into a colorful quilt that provides more than just bodily warmth, it radiates the warmth of love. Unit Zero will be able to draw strength from your messages whenever he is in pain, when he is tired, when he just needs a lift. Paradise50 went through a similar treatment for a throat cancer and tells how his quilt helped him:
It takes time and material to make community quilts -- and it is our small living. If you can contribute toward Unit Zero's quilt as well as give a message, that would be so kind. Here is a PayPal link -- or message me for an address should you prefer a check. $15/message is suggested -- although some give more to cover for those who give messages but cannot afford to donate. All messages are welcome -- they will have great value to Unit Zero, believe me!
The center block in 2thanks' quilt is called "Peace and Plenty". This is what the block looks like in a quilt we are making for the DK VA Hospital Support Project. Even if you don't quilt, you can support that project with your used books in our Book Drive
