The orange pinpoints are the location of each organized group of Daily Kos readers. If you'd like to join a group, click on a point and a box will pop up showing contact links. If you'd like to start a group, contact navajo for instructions.
A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward. |
Do you have an event that you celebrate to mark freedom?
Most folks around the world have some day or date (secular or not) that they think of as having special significance in terms of freedom. Last night at dusk began the Jewish holiday of Passover.
“The Jewish people celebrate Passover as a commemoration of their liberation by God from slavery in Egypt and their freedom as a nation under the leadership of Moses.”
I have a new Passover tradition that involves a child’s pinwheel.
I got to celebrate Passover the way I have the last few years...going in on my day off to serve Passover Seder to customers at work. Moses was not there, no one parted the Red Sea, but I did get to work with a wonderful co-worker and friend born on the Red Sea in Eritrea.
I also got punched, actually more backhanded, by a customer who became irate when he realized he was going to have his Seder next to a table of loud and happy children. I flatly told him, “don’t hit me.” He denied that he actually hit me, so I just softly blew my pinwheel in response and walked away.
A child left that pinwheel behind on a table a few weeks back. I wear it everyday now at work in my shirt pocket. the official explanation is that I am hoping the child will come back one day and reclaim it. The real reason I wear it though is for anger management. Whenever someone pisses me off I just bend my head down a bit and blow so that the pinwheel spins around. Co-workers know that is my way of saying, “blow it out your pinwheel.”
It has done wonders for me at work, and I was quite proud to wear it last night. It represents my freedom from saying rude things...at least at work and at least on Passover.
Is there some date, with either religious, political or personal meaning, that represents freedom to you? Or that represents freedom to any group you belong to or identify with?
As always, this is an open thread

The 6th Annual BAK Picnic
The 6th Annual Picnic will take place on Saturday, April 30 starting at 2 pm. The venue will be the lovely and historic Agua Caliente Park on the north-east side. It may already be warm by then so Azazello will try to get there early to grab the shadiest spot. If you’ve been watching the messages you know that we’re trying to plan the menu, as in who’s bringing what, so there won’t be too much food like there was last year in Bisbee. I’ll bring meat-on-a-stick of some sort, a portable charcoal grill and some soda pop. Topics for discussion will include: Prop.123, the Race for CD-2 and Why Arizona Loves Daily Kos.

Sunday, May, 15th at High NOON < NOTE TIME CHANGE!
Battery Wallace picnic area in the Marin Headlands
Potluck and BYOB, sunscreen and lawn chairs, let us know if you need a ride
Please send navajo a kosmail if you’d like to attend.
“High in the hills of the Marin Headlands, well past the throngs of tourists along Conzelman Drive, Battery Wallace picnic area is a crown jewel of the region. Located close to the Point Bonita Lighthouse, the four tables and grills in this wide-open spot overlook the Golden Gate Bridge, with sea-to-sky views of the Pacific, San Francisco in the background, and beach coves sculpting the coastal landscape. Battery Wallace is exposed, so the best time to ‘cue it up is…now! Park your buns here for a few hours or a full day. Ladies and gentlemen, start your briquettes!” ~ from Weekend Sherpa
From Hwy. 101 take Alexander Ave. exit. Turn left on the Marin Headlands Tunnel Route (aka Bunker Rd.). Follow Bunker Rd. nearly to the end; make a left on Field Rd. going up to the Visitor Center. Go past the Nike Site and make your first left. This takes you to one-way Conzelman Rd., where you’ll turn right and reach Battery Wallace. No dogs.
