But at the same time, I remain hopeful that we are going to be able to weather this. I remain hopeful that people will continue to work hard. I remain hopeful that more people will realize how awful he is. And I remain hopeful that it will soon be in their political best interest for more Republicans to do the right thing (not because it is right, but because they are craven).
Despite the insanity, this really was a good week for the good guys. And I am full of hope. How?
trump slipping in polls is very good. a strongman has no strength that is real. So if we can strip his pretend strength, we can count on more people standing up.
I’ll get to Booker in a moment (he deserves his own section) but he is not alone in being great.
That was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. I watched the last few hours live. It was riveting. What a man! Its a long time before 2028, but I know who I have my eye on!
One could marvel not only at New Jersey Senator Cory Booker’s endurance during his 25+ hours on the Senate floor, but at his coherence, joyful demeanor, and superb timing (coming as Democrats anxiously awaited the results from Wisconsin). Moreover, students of history, lovers of democracy, and American patriots had the chance to relish the symbolism of a Black man supplanting the record set by an embittered segregationist Strom Thurmond. Booker said about Thurmond:
“I’m here despite his speech. I’m here because as powerful as he was, the people were more powerful.”
Booker aimed to jolt his fellow Americans out of their lethargy, defeatism, and cynicism. Beginning Monday night at 7 p.m., he declared, “I rise with the intention of disrupting the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able.” He added: “I rise tonight because I believe sincerely that our nation is in crisis.”
He proceeded to explain precisely why and how Donald Trump and Elon Musk have brutalized the most vulnerable Americans, savaged functional government, assaulted the courts, shredded the Constitution, and betrayed our deepest held values. On issues like healthcare, he shared individual stories of the people who already have been harmed; he castigated Trump and Musk for taking away benefits from the elderly and poor to pay for giant tax cuts.
“They’re stealing from your grandchildren so that the wealthiest amongst us can get bigger tax cuts, and at the same time taking away medical coverage from the most vulnerable. What is that? It's not who we are. It's not who we are, America,” he thundered.
But Booker’s central message—“More Americans need to stand up and say enough is enough”—was the sort of call to arms Democrats have been waiting for since Trump took office. He made clear the effort must come both from elected leaders: “We should be stepping up and saying we accept a lot of responsibility for this moment, but we also have a lot of responsibility for meeting this moment.” And also from ordinary Americans: “Don’t let this be another normal day in America…But what is more needed from now is less people sitting on sidelines less people being witnesses of American history and more people determined to make it.”
Cory Booker’s Long Speech: By the Numbers
U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) held the Senate floor with a marathon speech that began at 7pm ET Monday evening and lasted until Tuesday night. After 25 hours and 5 minutes speaking directly to the American people, Senator Booker broke the record for longest individual floor speech ever delivered, surpassing the previous record set by Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who filibustered for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
Here’s a look at Booker’s speech, by the numbers:
- 25 hours and 5 minutes: total length of Booker’s speech
- 1164 pages of prepared material
- More than 200 stories from New Jerseyans and Americans across the country shared in the speech
- 350 million-plus likes on @SenatorBooker’s TikTok livestream of the speech
- More than 28,000 voicemails of encouragement left on Senator Booker’s main office line
- 300 thousand-plus: largest number of people viewing Senator Booker’s Live Stream across just his platforms at once
4. The Tariffs
the economy collapsing is NOT good. But boy are some folks waking up and that is great!
CNN Data Guru Reveals How Trump Tariffs Could End His Presidency
CNN’s senior data reporter Harry Enten warned that President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs could critically put his presidency on the line
Enten cautioned that his data and polling shows it is “really hard to find any” support for the tariffs at home. Consulting a CBS News/YouGov poll, Enten highlighted that 56 percent of Americans oppose new tariffs on imported goods in addition to tariffs on foreign cars and parts.
“Maybe against China, but against all our other countries, especially our allies. No, no, no. Oppose, oppose, oppose,” said Enten.
Enten cautioned that to wait and see could mark the downfall of Trump’s presidency.
“100%. This could be a risk that ends up ending his presidency,” said Enten. “Americans want, simply put, nothing to do with it, yet Trump decides to keep pushing forward.”
Trump Did the One Thing That Could Unravel His MAGA Base
President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs could be MAGA’s last straw, as some Republicans break from their usual blind fealty to Trump’s policies, The New Abnormal co-hosts Andy Levy and Danielle Moodie said on the latest episode.
Republican Senators Mitch McConnell, Rand Paul, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski all broke party lines on Wednesday to vote in favor of rescinding Trump’s 25 percent emergency tariffs on Canadian goods—which spurred Trump’s fury on Truth Social.
Despite the resolution clearing the Senate, Trump declared that “the House will never approve” it and he will “never sign it.” Yet their defiance could be a canary in a coal mine for what is to come, according to Levy.
Four Republicans Defy Trump Even After His Late-Night Threats
Democrats were able to pass a resolution repealing President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada Wednesday thanks to the help of four Republican senators.
The vote Wednesday ended up passing 51-48, with Republican senators Susan Collins, Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski, and Rand Paul crossing the bipartisan line despite the president’s angry rant earlier that day.
GOP Senator Warns Trump Tariffs Could Spell Electoral Disaster for Republicans
Republican Sen. Rand Paul had a stern history lesson for President Donald Trump, saying that his latest flurry of tariffs could lead to GOP “decimation” in both the House and the Senate.
The Kentucky lawmaker was one of four Republicans whom Trump flamed on Truth Social Wednesday for their dissent regarding his “Liberation Day” levies. Undeterred, Paul repeated his concerns in a double swipe the same day, first speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill then later on in a chat with The Hill’s online show “Rising.”
Murdoch’s Paper: Trump Just Made the Swamp So Much Bigger
President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs will be such a windfall for Beltway lobbyists that he might as well have called his announcement “Buy Another Yacht Day” for the Washington, D.C., swamp, the Wall Street Journal's editorial board wrote in a scathing op-ed. On Wednesday, Trump announced a baseline import tax of 10 percent on products from every country in the world, then hit products from about 60 countries with additional duties ranging from 20 to 34 percent. U.S. companies pay the tax, with the costs typically passed along the consumer. To avoid those additional costs of doing businesses and keep their sales strong, companies will seek exemption from the tariffs, the Journal warned. “Mr. Trump is saying there will be no tariff exemptions. But watch that promise vanish as politicians, including Mr. Trump, see exemptions as a way to leverage campaign contributions from business. Liberation Day is Buy Another Yacht Day for the swamp,” the paper’s editorial board wrote.
more-republicans-back-bill-giving-congress-a-say-on-tariffs
A bipartisan bill to give Congress a vote on new tariffs is gaining notable GOP backing.
Sens. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Jerry Moran of Kansas signed on as cosponsors of the bill, introduced Thursday by Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.).
Other GOP senators signaled this week that they could support the legislation, too, but haven’t yet signed on. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) told reporters he would be “inclined’ to support it and “there’s something to be said for having congressional review.”
The measure would limit the president’s power to impose tariffs, following the Trump administration’s move to unilaterally slap tariffs on countries across the globe. It would require the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of such an imposition and for Congress to explicitly approve any new tariffs within 60 days. The bill also would allow Congress to end any tariff at any time.
Ted Cruz warns Trump tariffs could be ‘terrible for America’
Senate Commerce Chair Ted Cruz is warning about major risks for the American economy and its automotive industry thanks to President Donald Trump’s trade war, saying it could result in the biggest tax hike in a “long, long time.”
“I’m seeing a lot of Republican cheerleaders reflexively defending what the White House is doing,” Cruz said on his podcast Friday, but cautioned the administration’s latest actions could “hurt jobs and hurt America.”
The alarm bells from Cruz, a Texas Republican who has called himself Trump’s “strongest supporter” in the Senate, reflects growing unease among Republicans about Trump’s tariff crusade and the impact it could have on prices for consumers and, consequently, the GOP’s political prospects.
5. special election massacre
Oh lordy, lordy. Was it only a few days ago when we kicked their butts in specials? Why yes it was. Let’s celebrate!
Americans Win
News Flash: You can’t buy a state supreme court election in Wisconsin.
Congress may not be offended by Donald Trump’s power grab, his efforts to strip them of the power of the purse, but Americans are.
It all came to a head last night in Wisconsin, where voters issued a resounding “No!” when Musk tried to tell them what was best for Wisconsin. Wisconsinites understood he didn’t have their best interests at heart and delivered the message that they aren’t for sale. Musk is for Musk. Trump is for Trump. Wisconsin voters had had enough.
Susan Crawford, now Justice Crawford, won with 55% of the vote. Even the counties where the Republican candidate won showed dramatic shifts towards the Democrats. He was about five points below where Trump was in 2024. Every single county in Wisconsin that had reported as of Wednesday morning had shifted towards the Democrats.
Wisconsin was the leading edge. We’ve got guard rails to rebuild in Congress, and also in state and local government. We are experiencing the worst of it right now, living through the long slow nightmare of a constitutional crisis where no one is truly safe. That’s all the incentive we need to get to work, and elections are what we have to work with as citizens. They can be as powerful as we are willing to fight to make them!
The MAGA Backlash Arrives
Democrats solidified their 4-3 progressive majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Tuesday, and the ramifications are nationwide. The comfortable win by Democratic Judge Susan Crawford is the second sign in two weeks of a political backlash against the Trump Presidency.
That’s a warning to the GOP that the Trump-Musk governing style is stirring a backlash that could cost them control of Congress next year. All the more so given the results in two special House races in Florida Tuesday to replace a pair of Republicans.
These are safe seats, and Republicans won the western Panhandle district held by Matt Gaetz with some room to spare. But Jimmy Patronis’s 57% was about nine points less than the 66% that Mr. Gaetz won in 2024. It was a similar story in the Palm Coast seat of former Rep. Mike Waltz, who is now Mr. Trump’s national security adviser.
The One Question Everyone in D.C. Is Asking After Trump’s Election Meltdown
Who is next out of the door?
That is the question being asked at the White House as a major vibe change in the political landscape was being felt all the way from Washington D.C. to the Great Lakes and way beyond.
For the first time in almost five months, the Democratic Party is smiling again, Donald Trump’s hibernating Republican opponents are waking from their slumber, the DOGE wrecking ball is whiffing, and Emperor Elon Musk is about to be out on his own and fumbling for his clothes.Who would have thought that an Upper Midwest state famous for beer and cheese would cause such a cataclysm in American politics?
Judges were balking, DOGE math wasn’t adding up, and folks around the country were realizing that they were the ones losing their jobs.
But a 10-point thumping in a race between two candidates nobody outside Wisconsin’s judicial system had ever heard of in a battleground state that Trump had appeared to have conquered has caught everybody’s attention.
Musk Mocked Relentlessly Over His Spectacular Election Flub
Musk had personally campaigned in the state, even wearing a cheesehead hat at one rally, and warned in a tele-town hall appearance on the eve of the election that defeat would be “catastrophic.”
As a little girl growing up in Chippewa Falls, I never could have imagined that I’d be taking on the richest man in the world for justice in Wisconsin. And we won.”
True to form, Texas Democrat Jasmine Crockett was more forthright in her message. “Well well well, I guess Wisconsin agreed on the message for old Elon: “F’ off!” she wrote on X.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) called the Democrat-backed liberal judge’s clear win an “a**-kicking.” He added on X: “Where else does Elon want to try and buy an election?”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries went on TV to drag the Tesla CEO. He told MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell that Republicans should “walk away” from the “unelected, unpopular, unhinged and un-American billionaire puppet master.”
“Elon Musk was just decisively rejected by the voters of Wisconsin. He tried to spend his unlimited resources to buy a state Supreme Court seat in Wisconsin—and it failed spectacularly," he added.
A Very Special Election Night
In the first major test of Trump’s self-claimed mandate to govern, voters went to the polls in three special elections of national significance: a pivotal seat on the Wisconsin state Supreme Court, and two congressional House seats in deeply red Florida.
Elon Musk threw himself, and his money, into the Wisconsin race, sensing correctly that a big defeat could carry political ramifications, both short and long term.
The results are now in, and we have many reasons to cheer them. In my mind, there are three main takeaways, so let’s run through them while we grab a plate of schadenfreude from the sad Elon Musk buffet.
Democrats are ascendant
Money isn’t everything
Trump and Musk are scared.
and it wasn’t just the WI race:
Illinois GOP suffered major election losses in suburbs that are critical for its rebuilding effort
Two days before Tuesday’s local elections, the Illinois Republican Party sent out an email to supporters declaring it to be “a do or die moment for us.”
The email was just another in a series of fundraising solicitations. But it may have more accurately captured the importance of the election, which featured wide-ranging Democratic victories in the suburbs critical for rebuilding a state GOP already on the verge of irrelevance in Illinois politics and reflected voter angst over the early tumultuous months of Republican President Donald Trump’s second presidency.
“There was a broad rejection of what Donald Trump and the Republican Party stands for, and Illinois Democrats had perhaps one of the best nights we’ve ever had,” Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker said on an unrelated press call Wednesday from Mexico, where he is leading a state trade mission. Statewide, the Illinois Democratic Party said it backed 280 candidates in Tuesday’s election and 222, or 79% of them, were victorious.
The governor attributed the results in Illinois to both organization among state Democrats and broader national pushback against Trump administration policies and government cuts being spearheaded by Trump-aligned billionaire Elon Musk.
“The anger is felt in Illinois, as it is across the entire country, and that did play a role, there’s no doubt, in turnout and in the actual results,” he said of the government-cutting actions of Trump and Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
Two-term Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin, a Republican, was defeated by Democrat-backed John Laesch to lead the state’s second largest city. In Orland Park, two-term Mayor Keith Pekau, a supporter of far-right elements of the state GOP, was ousted by more moderate Republican Jim Dodge.
Both Irvin and Pekau, building off their past municipal election successes, had previously sought higher office — Irvin as a candidate for the GOP nomination for governor and Pekau seeking a congressional seat — only to be defeated in those bids before losing Tuesday.
But the real devastation came in dozens of township elections across the suburbs that saw Democrats flip power from Republicans, raising the question of whether the state GOP has fallen so low on the political depth chart that it will prevent any short-term rise to competitiveness in Illinois in a Trump 2.0 era.
Democratic victories in the eastern side of DuPage County tell much of the tale.
“These results mark a seismic shift in local politics. Several townships in DuPage County that had never before elected a Democrat will now be represented by Democratic leadership — a testament to the party’s deepening connection with voters and its commitment to delivering for working families,” DuPage County Democrats said in a statement.
The county’s Democratic chair, Reid McCollum, called the voting “a profound statement,” adding that he expects Democrats will win all 49 contested township races across the county.
The GOP also faltered in local Naperville races, where five candidates for the City Council and park board backed by DuPage GOP Chairman Kevin Coyne’s political action committee, Safe Suburbs USA, were headed toward defeat in unofficial returns. Instead, the council and park board candidates heading to victory were backed by Democratic U.S. Reps. Bill Foster and Lauren Underwood, both of Naperville.
Two mayors also backed by Coyne’s PAC, Aurora’s Irvin and Lisle Mayor Christopher Pecak, also were defeated.
The Democratic wins weren’t limited to DuPage County. In Elk Grove Township, for example, Republicans weren’t challenged for supervisor, clerk or assessor, but four Democrats defeated the incumbent Republicans on the township board of supervisors.
Aaron Del Mar, who won reelection as Palatine Township highway commissioner, said attitudes toward Trump and Musk and their efforts to dismantle government in searching for waste, were primary factors for Tuesday’s Democratic victories.
Former state Rep. Gordon Hintz beat incumbent Jon Doemel today to become the next Winnebago County exec.
President Donald Trump won the county by 4.8 percentage points in November.
Former Dem state Sen. Melissa Agard, meanwhile, easily secured a full four-year term as Dane County exec. She opted against running for reelection to the state Senate in 2024 as he pursued the county exec’s office in a special election. She topped Stephen Ratzlaff, a furniture salesman, with 80% of the vote, according to unofficial returns.
Never Mind Wisconsin. The GOP Should be Worried About the Florida Results.
It was the results in Florida, in one of the nation’s most rock-ribbed Republican House districts, that suggested Musk’s political blast radius could be a problem for the GOP going into the 2026 midterm elections.
The Democratic nominees in both districts indeed ran better than expected — far better than in 2024 — but in the end, the GOP held both seats. Yet the Republican victory in Florida’s Panhandle-based 1st District obscured a troubling harbinger that appears to be connected to Musk — a loss in Pensacola’s Escambia County.
Closer to Dallas than to Miami, Escambia is the westernmost county in the state. Like much of the state’s Panhandle, its politics are more Deep South than South Florida. It’s the least red of the four counties that make up the district, but that’s misleading given the region’s general conservative orientation: Escambia, which borders Alabama, hasn’t voted for a Democratic presidential nominee since 1960. It’s a place that voted for Barry Goldwater in 1964, George Wallace in 1968, delivered a nearly 20-point victory to Trump in 2024 and also voted for polarizing former GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz by big margins — even after the sex scandal allegations.
On Tuesday, however, Escambia County broke with habit and narrowly voted for Democrat Gay Valimont over Republican Jimmy Patronis. In 2024, when Valimont was also the Democratic nominee, she lost there by 14 points.
In fact, across the four counties that make up the 1st District, Valimont lost by 32 points in 2024. On Tuesday, that margin was cut in half — she lost by 15.
I love how Politico thinks that getting rid of Musk will fix this. Good luck with that girl!
6. Musk and Tesla — the losingest
Oh lord things are bad for Musk and his companies! Let’s enjoy
‘Drag on Donald Trump’: CNN Data Guru Highlights Musk’s Plummeting Popularity
It looks like laying off thousands of workers and slashing funding for several programs hasn’t helped Elon Musk curry favor with the public.
CNN’s senior data reporter Harry Enten noted Thursday that the DOGE chief’s popularity has tanked in just three months.
“The more people get to know about Musk and the job he’s doing, the less they like it,” Enten told Erin Burnett OutFront. “They want Musk ‘Adios, amigo.‘”
“He is a drag on Donald Trump. And the question is, how many more [Anthony] Scaramuccis can he last there?” the CNN data guru said, referencing a former White House communications director who had a high-profile falling-out with Trump.
Tesla sales tumble 13% as Musk backlash, competition and aging lineup turn off buyers
Tesla sales fell 13% in the first three months of the year, another sign that Elon Musk’s once high-flying car company is struggling to attract buyers.
The leading electric vehicle maker has faced a growing backlash from Musk’s embrace of right-wing politics and his role in the Trump administration. Opponents have staged protests at Tesla showrooms in the U.S. and in Europe, where the sales declines have been steeper.
NYC to sue Tesla over Elon Musk’s alleged breach of fiduciary duties
New York City Comptroller Brad Lander has asked the city, which is a major Tesla shareholder, to sue Tesla and CEO Elon Musk over alleged breaches of fiduciary duties.
Lander asked the New York City Law Department to pursue securities litigation against Tesla on behalf of the New York City pension systems, which owns 3 million shares in Tesla.
Elon Musk to Tesla Cybertruck buyers: No take-backs. It’s a lemon
Elon Musk’s Tesla woes are continuing to pile up.
With Tesla having issues selling new Cybertrucks, the automaker is reportedly not taking any as trade-ins. Many Cybertruck owners reported trying to trade-in the truck for a new vehicle and they were told that the automaker currently doesn’t accept its own vehicle as a trade-in.
Some owners who have had their trucks in service for extended periods of time are also trying to get Tesla to take the truck back, but the company is forcing them to go through the Lemon Law process.
It’s not surprising to see Tesla not wanting to take back used Cybertrucks as their prices are falling fast.
Tesla Semi suffers more delays and ‘dramatic’ price increase
According to a Tesla Semi customer, the electric truck program is suffering more delays and a price increase that is described as “dramatic.”
Tesla Semi has seen many delays, more than any other vehicle program at Tesla.
It was initially unveiled in 2017, and CEO Elon Musk claimed that it would go into production in 2019.
In late 2022, Tesla held an event where it unveiled the “production version” of the Tesla Semi and delivered the first few units to a “customer-partner”: PepsiCo.
More than 3 years later, the vehicle never went into volume production. Instead, Tesla only ran a very low volume pilot production at a factory in Nevada and only delivered a few dozen trucks to customers as part of test programs.
But Tesla promised that things would finally happen for the Tesla Semi this year.
7. Other signs of weakness
Autocrats who suffer early losses lose the aura of invincibility, undermine morale among supporters, and fuel more enthusiasm among opponents.
In 2017, the big Democratic win was the defeat of the ACA repeal, a phenomenal achievement considering the GOP trifecta in place. This year the wins are coming consistently in courts, and now—to the delight, triumph, and relief of Democrats—in the critical Wisconsin supreme court race.
As we have noted, Trump is losing a lot. Constitutional scholar Steve Vladeck found that out of 67 identified court cases challenging Trump actions, “district courts have granted some type of preliminary relief in 46 of those 67 cases (68.7%).” The wins are all the more impressive given that the “67 rulings have come from 51 different district judges appointed by seven different presidents sitting in 14 different district courts across eight circuits.” The favorable rulings have come from “39 different judges appointed by five different presidents and sitting in 11 different district courts across seven circuits.”
Republicans hesitant to stand behind Trump’s plan for student loans
Now, many Republicans are worried about the size of the debt and the staffing needed to manage the complex system of servicers, borrowers and loan applications. And with about 43 million borrowers — and a record number of them starting to fall behind on their payments since the pandemic-era hiatus ended in 2023 — transferring this work may be one of the most challenging hurdles for unwinding the agency Trump has pledged to close.
“A lot of us were thinking it would go to the Treasury. We’re talking about the huge nature of student loans,” House Education and Workforce Chair Tim Walberg said in an interview. “They have much larger staffing capabilities right now, than SBA, but the president may have something specific in mind that I’m not aware of.”
Donald Trump is a weak man, not a strong man. And today he is also a loser, not a winner.
We beat and outperformed Trump and MAGA in 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023 and downballot races in 2024. We have stared down Trump and his rancid politics again and again and triumphied. We stumbled in 2024. But now as he stumbles, fucks up, wildly overreaches and betrays America we are standing back up, finding a higher gear, reaching deep into the greatness and goodness of this exceptional country and summoning the courage to once again defeat his horrible man and his anything-but-America-first politics.
We can do this people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My Fellow Republicans and President Trump, We Must Stand Up to Putin
Don Bacon serves on the House Armed Services Committee and retired as a Brigadier General after nearly 30 years of service in the Air Force.
In recent weeks, too many of my fellow Republicans — including Mr. Trump — have treated Russia with velvet gloves, shying away from calling out Mr. Putin’s flatly illegal war and even blaming Ukraine for starting it. As the White House works to end the fighting and forge a just and durable peace, my party must reaffirm our commitment to opposing Mr. Putin’s expansionism and to supporting Ukraine’s defense of its sovereignty.
8. Big judicial victory!
This one has been eating at me (I’m sure I am not the only one) so this is really good news
Judge Orders Return of Man Who Was Mistakenly Deported to El Salvador
A federal judge gave the Trump administration until the end of Monday to return to the United States a Maryland man who was inadvertently deported to El Salvador last month despite a court order allowing him stay in the country.
In a ruling from the bench on Friday, the judge, Paula Xinis, said that administration officials had acted without “legal basis” last month when they arrested the man, Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, and put him on a plane — with no due process — to a notorious Salvadoran prison.
The decision by Judge Xinis, which came during a hearing in Federal District Court in Maryland, was a sharp rebuke to the Trump administration.

“Whatever happens, stay alive.
Don't die before you're dead.
Don't lose yourself, don't lose hope, don't lose direction.
Stay alive, with yourself, with every cell of your body, with every fiber of your skin.
Stay alive, learn, study, think, read, build, invent, create, speak, write, dream, design.
Stay alive, stay alive inside you, stay alive also outside, fill yourself with colors of the world, fill yourself with peace, fill yourself with hope.
Stay alive with joy.

Side by side on a log by the bay.
Sunlight. Unleashed dogs,
prancing through surf, almost exploding
out of their skins with perfect happiness.
Dogs who don't know about fired park rangers,
or canceled health research, or tariff wars,
or the suicide hotline for veterans getting defunded,
or or or. We've listed horror upon horror
to each other for weeks now, and it does no good,
so instead I tell her how I held a two-day old baby
in my arms, inhaling him like a fresh-baked loaf of bread,
then watched as a sneeze erupted through his body
like a tiny volcano. It was the look of pure
astonishment on his face, as if he were Adam
in the garden of Eden making his debut achoo,
as if it were the first sneeze that ever blew,
that got me. She tells me how her dog
once farted so loudly he startled himself
and fell off the bed where he'd been lolling,
and then the two of us start to laugh so hard
we almost fall off our own log. And this
is our resistance for today; remembering
original innocence. And they can't
take it away from us, though they ban
our very existence, though they slash
our rights to ribbons, we will have
our mirth and our birthright gladness.
Long after every unsold Tesla
has vaporized, and earth has closed over
even the names of these temporary tyrants,
somewhere some women like us
will be sitting side by side, facing the water,
telling human stories and laughing still.
I am so proud and so lucky to be in this with all of you. ✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 💙❤️💛💚✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
