A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do you still have vinyl records?
I have a fair amount of my vinyl records. Actually I have maybe about half of them. Once upon a time I moved from Denver to Portland and left my record collection with my mother. I had them in the standard record holders of the day which were wooden boxes with labels of fruits on them. For some reason my mom let my sister take them. She and her husband didn't take good care of them. Once upon a time they were all pristine and in plastic record covers. When my sister got them, they became scraped up and scratched. The covers got worn and the records became filled with the extra sounds of pops and hisses. About half of them were simply ruined including a few their dog chewed.
I wasn't too happy seeing the sad state of my record collection at my sister's house when I moved back to Denver briefly before moving on to Santa Cruz. I took what records were decent and have had them since. Smileycreek had a turntable which eventually died. A couple years ago I bought a new turntable so I could play my records again with all their scratches, pops and hisses.
I was listening to a radio show the other day and the topic of vinyl records was being discussed. One thing that came up is recordings are done differently for different mediums. Vinyl records are still considered to be the best for overall sound. These days recordings are created primarily for making mp3's since that's how we mostly get our music now. It turns out that they are made specifically for listening with ear buds so the bass is really accentuated. If you play mp3's on a big stereo system, the music simply has too much bass.
The two guys talking about recordings went into the history of how records were recorded first to be played on the oldest record players with the big horn. Later they were recorded and mixed to be played on a stereo. After that came quadraphonics, which really didn't last too long, but I do remember four distinct tracks that played on each individual speaker. Records recorded for that system really did sound much better than regular stereo recordings. Now music is mostly recorded to sound better in ear buds. I hadn't thought about that before but it made perfect sense that recordings were mixed and made to sound the best on the dominant playing devices of the time.
They were making the point that to have the best sound, you need to buy vinyl records which are making a comeback. Remember the whole ritual? You'd decide to buy an album, drive to the record store and thumb through a bunch of records just to see what was there to be had. Then you'd plunk down $7.00 or so for a new record. Older discounted records were sold for 1/2 that or less. They were marked with a small cut in the record cover. Then there were the underground record stores with used records and rare recordings including lots of bootleg records. Ah the memories...
You went home and listened to your new record while you looked at the album cover inside and out. You'd read whatever was written on it. Often the record sleeve itself had stuff to read. You had something with some life in it. A lot of effort was made to produce the whole thing. There was some great artwork too. As a teenager nothing beat that whole ritual of anticipation, going to the record store, spending too much time there looking around, buying a record, listening to it 100 times while looking at the cover.
I took a few pictures of some of my remaining record collection and will show them to you.

by Avilyn ♥ for New Jersey Kossacks
The New Jersey Kossacks held their inaugural meet-up on June 14, 2014. Thanks so much to Avilyn for taking up the reins and leading this important group. She noticed in all of the Christy diaries that many New Jersey folk came out of lurking or signed up to comment. She was motivated by this to start this group. I'm glad because there's a lot of work to do in New Jersey. I also noticed in her start-up diaries that many people couldn't attend this event but wanted to be invited to the next event. She had 18 Kossacks sign up with her first announcement of the new group. This is excellent and I'm sure there are more New Jersey Kossacks out there.
Here's the group photo:

Event Organizers! Please contact wink from Netrootsradio.com by KosMail to schedule airtime with them to live broadcast your Event. Wink & Justice will then promote it on The After Show radio program!
