I know for a fact that I’m not the only person rooting for a certain period-piece movie to be honored by the Motion Picture Association of America. Warhorse, the film by Stephen Spielberg, adopted from the novel penned by Michael Morpurgo (who also got a screen play credit), is getting rave reviews, and why not? It’s a sweeping, Lawrence of Arabia-esque epic, with engaging characters, vivid action and a compelling story line. But did you know there was a real-life “Joey”? And her story is every bit as powerful and stirring as what is currently on the silver screen, albeit not as well known. Curious? It’s nice to see horses getting the recognition they richly deserve. Just in the last few years, equine superstars in fact and fiction are being celebrated by the moocher-obsessed and moocher-challenged alike. That being so, (and cuz I’m WAY late in writing a new Moocher Diary, sorry Triciawyse!), it might be nice to learn a little bit about these stunning creatures that tamed mankind, thus giving us the ability to civilize the world. A little while back, in the middle of a Pootie Diary posted by the incomparable Triciawyse, "Queen of the Pooties", (hereinafter known as "QOTP"), I suggested that there should be an addition to the Pootie lexicon: Everybody knows that Pooties = Cats ‘n Kittehs and Woozles = Dogs. (Everybody who IS anybody that is – I cannot speak for those who do not acknowledge Pootiedom as a Superior Ethos). However, I maintained that the time had come for a heretofore underrepresented creature be given a proper name to lend substance to their incredible contribution to the Well Being of the Universe and take their proper place as a fundament in all things Pootie. There has been much discussion of late, both in the blogs and in the TradMed of the impact of the Obama Presidency on race relations in America. We are all Americans, which means we are eternal optimists. In our heart of hearts, we want to believe that having our first African-American president is a giant leap for mankind.

Well, okay, maybe not so much. We are experiencing the ongoing, not-so-dog-whistle racism of the Birthers, and then there was the tragi-comedy of the Professor Gates incident. But perhaps these actions represent extremist movements or the institutionalized racism sometimes found in established venues, like law enforcement. Regular day-to-day individual Americans don’t go down that road anymore. I made a comment in a recent diary about the rise and fall of racism in our country and a fellow poster suggested I turn the notion into a diary. Follow me over the fold, if you dare, while I relate three episodes from my own narrative that suggests something quite to the contrary.

There is no doubt that we Americans are a fortunate people. As is peculiar to our history, when we’ve needed the right man at the right time, that person has appeared. And we’ve chosen him to be our leader. We have elected a cool-headed man, a distinguished legal scholar, an inspiring speaker; a devoted husband and father who came from humble circumstances and remembers from whence he came. Oh, and one other thing. He’s Black. Maybe you’ve noticed?

One of the dangers of racism is that it often crops up when and where you least expect it. The effect is similar to cutting yourself with an extremely sharp knife – you don’t realize you’re injured until you look down and see the blood. Generally, you have a split second to think, "Oh, shit, that’s gonna hurt!" And boy, you ain’t disappointed are you? While painful, however, a lesson has been learned. You’ll pay closer attention next time, won’t you? And sometimes, the lesson is painful, but funny at the same time. Follow me over the fold, and I’ll tell you what I mean.

I apologize for the relative brevity of this diary, and if it is a duplicate (I did search), I will remove it immediately.

However, some news has caught my eye, and I thought I would share it:

Meanwhile, a former senior advisor to Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich 1/81/8 blah-GOYA-vich 3/83/8 is suggesting the House panel examining impeachment order a psychiatric exam for the embattled Illinois governor.
In a memo to the panel, Bob Arya outlined a series of jealous outbursts, frightened staff, and emotional instabilities he observed during his time in the office.
Arya says Blagojevich's reactions were "violently unpredictable" and depended on the time of day and his mood.
The governor also allegedly took out personal vendettas against lawmakers with whom he had issues by refusing to help their constituents

I am not an adept diarist. Often I am awestruck by the sheer level of hyper-competence exhibited by those who diary here regularly. My own few diaries tend to the lighter side – mere fluff, rather than the hard-hitting, well-researched, insightful contributions I see here on a daily, indeed, hourly basis. You might say I’m a dwarf asteroid in the glittering constellation that is the dKos.

So I don’t diary often. I prefer to follow the adage, "It’s better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you’re stupid rather than open your mouth and prove it." However, in recent weeks a topic has arisen that touches me to my core and I simply cannot bear to remain silent. If you have a moment, follow me over the fold. Won’t take long, I promise. And even though I searched, if I missed this specific topic, I’ll delete this entry.

It’s been a rather stress-filled week and even more stress-filled weekend, my fellow Kossacks. I’m coming off a 7-hour drive from extreme southern Illinois, only to have my older dog land in the emergency room this morning with a sprained shoulder. So it was a considerable relief to sit down at a local restaurant with a bowl of rabbit food topped by the omnipresent boneless, skinless chicken breast and the local newspaper. Imagine my surprise when my eyes cast upon a fabulous op-ed piece, penned by a resident of St. Charles, Illinois. It carried the refreshing title: Hillary Supporters Aren’t Bitter; They’re Concerned. In her opinion, she states that although she was angry that Hillary wasn’t on the ticket, she would vote for McCain for different reasons.

I read the piece, and you know what? She’s absolutely right. Her reasoning is impeccable. Think I’m kidding? Cross over, children! Cross with me now, over the fold, into the light.

Some weeks ago, a colleague of mine shot me an e-mail which included, inter alia: "Did I hear you say you were an ‘Obama-Mama?’ Sure hope you were kidding!"

Now, this came totally out of left field. When not talking shop, my buddy and I usually hold forth on The Essentials Of Life: horses, dogs, Harley Davidson’s, and good beer. We had only touched on the political when discussing the various feasances, (mis, mal and non) perpetrated by the current administration of Our Great State. So I was quite surprised when, in response to my, "Nope. Not kiddin’", he offered to debate positions. Seems his previous debating partner had been transferred to another department, and he was jonesing hard for some political discourse. Over the next weeks, I began to realize something wondrous and dreadful was happening. Ladies and gentlemen, I have my very own Personal Troll.

Well, sir you’ve done it now. You took a stance, altered a position, or voiced an opinion. I’m sure you listened to your advisors and exercised your best judgment. And did people listen to you and nod sagely at your wisdom? They did not. They howled. Yes, indeed they did. You went from Jesus the Savior to Pontius Pilot’s skankier older brother in about two weeks. Some of this from your most fervent supporters, too! Goodness! The blogosphere exploded; you made a few people very happy and a few more very unhappy, sir. And in so doing, you learned a valuable lesson – one most politicians have to learn and relearn and relearn again. In case you missed it, let me reinforce: From now on – for the rest of your life (or at least the end of your second term of office) - you are never going to know who your friends are. Sir, you need me. Senator – you need to buy a dog.
