My Last Minute Happy Hour Event with the Twin Cities Kossacks
by We may need a new organizer? ♥ for Twin Cities Kossacks
I flew to Minneapolis last week to attend the American Indian College Fund's fabulous fundraising gala. I decided to invite the local Kossacks to Happy Hour the evening before the big event. As usual, it was a great time and I greeted and hugged new Kossacks like we were dear old friends. Here is our group shot and then a few details after that.
L-R: parryander, navajo, raptavio, WineRev & leftrev in the floral jacket
This is my second time enjoying parryander's company, the first being at NN11. She rode her motor scooter over! I was pleased to hear of her continued concern about our American Indian issues we write about.
I was watching carefully for any Kossacks looking for us. A woman came into the crowded bar and calmly surveyed the scene. When she spotted me a very sweet smile crossed her face. I knew she was one of us. My wide grin waited patiently as she weaved her way through the maze of tables. She said, "navajo? I'm leftrev." And then we had one big, gigantic hug. I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me. Kossacks love Kossacks. It's that simple. What a pleasure to sit with her and just bask in the warmth of the effort she made by driving 1.5 hours to be with us. It's a great thing and so appreciated.
Next came raptavio. I was given instructions by Aji to give him an enormous hug for her. I did so and then he insisted on one from me. Hug City, people. raptavio brought some show and tell. Products from a 3-D printer. So impressive. This bicycle-chain-link-like piece was not assembled. The printer spewed it out like this:
So amazing.
WineRev brought show and tell also. His two books:
Recounting Minnesota started off as a few (hah!) diaries on the Franken-Coleman Senate Recount. 156 diaries later Al Franken was finally sworn in the following July. I just kept doing a daily diary or so on the latest until about # 60. The readers/fans/correctors/clarifiers all started saying "You should make this into a book." And editors, a publisher, Markos the forward-writer, and even some $ appeared among the Kossacks to make it happen.
Encampment was a 10-year labor of love, growing out of my reaction over the 10 years before THAT to the last episode of Ked Burns' PBS series on the Civil War. I asked myself, "What might it have been like, 50 years afterwards, if a Yank and Reb had a reunion?" I discovered the 1913 Gettysburg event had been just that, and for 54,000 vets, in front of 100,000 spectators. And I also found no one had written anything about it since it happened. In researching it around 2003 I also discovered that it had been a segregated affair. And so I changed the root question of my novel to "What if 5000 black veterans had showed up at Gettysburg in 1913, invited or not, and by their very presence DARED America not only to reconcile blue and gray, but also black and white?" So that's how Calvin and Zachariah and Lucius came to meet each other and help heal a nation.
Here we are raising our glasses to Angry Marmot who could not attend but wanted to:
Markos popped for all our drinks. So the cheers above is to him also!
The original organizer of Twin Cities Kossacks is imonlylurking. So enthusiastic and she really made an effort. But I haven't heard from her since her first Kossack event. Her last comment on site was Jan. 8th. Anybody know anything? I hope she's ok.
I'd invite you to contact her to join the Twin Cities Kossacks but not sure she's participating anymore. If you're reading this and want to join her group, send her a Kosmail but also send me one and I'll keep to give to her or the next organizer. Stay tuned.
Twin Cities Kossacks needs more members! Would you like to join? Tell us in the comments.

by brillig ♥ for Koscadia
blueoregon organized a wonderful meet-up for brillig's and mic's visit to Portland, Oregon this past August. Somehow I missed the recap. As I like to show photos from all events, please see below even though it's long past. It's still important to document in our Kossack Group's list of diaries.
From brillig:
By far, however, the most enjoyable part of the day was our meetup with several Portland area Kossacks: our intrepid tour guide Arenosa, blueoregon, loggersbrat, Cedwyn, quill and pdxteacher. It was truly a pleasure meeting new friends and seeing old, all of whom were very accommodating that our crazy vacation schedule didn't leave a lot of options open. We can't wait to get out there to visit again, and remember that if you visit us here, we'll take you to the other Portland!
Smiling faces, courtesy of K1's photographic skill:
