A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

The orange pinpoints are the location of each organized group of Kossacks.
If you'd like to join a group, click on a point and a box will pop up showing contact links.
If you'd like to start a group, contact navajo for instructions.

Good morning Kogs and Kossacks in Dailykosland!

Merry Monday and welcome to the working week...

Have you ever been on a cruise?

I've never been on a cruise.

I probably will never go on one.  I'm scared.  Phobic, almost.

I saw A Night To Remember at an impressionable age.  I watched it on a tiny black and white TV with 1958-level special effects and my grandparents sitting right in the room with me, but I was only about three years old and it gave me nightmares. Though I later became an expert swimmer, fear of being on an ocean liner had been imprinted on me.

More than 50 years later, I was the last person I knew to see James Cameron's Titanic.  I avoided it in the theatre, and avoided it on TV for years after that.  One time I did not change the channel fast enough and saw just a few seconds of the scene where the older couple is embracing in bed as the waters come in around them.  That freaked me out so much I avoided the movie for a few more years. Eventually I did watch it though, on TV with commercial interruptions so that I would not get swept up in it.  I am embarrassed to say that it still scared me.  I wish I could un-see parts of it.

This is ironic because everything else about me says that I should love the idea of a cruise.  I actually love the all five senses experience of being on the ocean.  I love the sound of a boat going through the water.  I love the smell of sea air.  I take day trips on the water.  I've had great fun on Boston Harbor day cruises, sunset cruises, and booze cruises.  Sometimes on beautiful warm breezy days I go down to Long Wharf and ride the MBTA commuter boat to Hull and Quincy and back.  You used to be able to buy one ticket and just stay on the boat and ride back and forth all day, but they've changed that recently.  I enjoy the ferry ride from Woods Hole to Martha's Vineyard, but I haven't been there as often.  Once I went on a whale watch and it was a thrilling experience.

I see ads for cruises and it looks like a nonstop party. I know people who own property in the Caribbean who keep offering to put me up if I ever traveled to various islands.  The fall foliage cruises appeal to me also.  Up the New England coast in the late September weather?  Sounds wonderful.  And I am always getting materials from Harvard about extravagant alumni cruises with five figure price tags.  Polynesia sounds great but I'm not sure where they get the idea that I have that kind of money...!

People say "you don't even know you are on a boat" but I want the feeling of being on a boat!  That's the part that appeals to me!  I wouldn't want a ship that was so big I could not feel the gentle rocking with the waves.  I want to be able to smell the air and look out over the horizon.  That sounds like a job for a smaller ship with sails and cabin space for only a few people, not these enormous multi deck ships that are as big as floating cities.

In general the mega ship concept doesn't seem like a match for me.  I don't need cheesy stage shows or an indoor shopping mall. I just want a comfy chair on a shaded deck and a place to listen to the ship glide through the water as I read books or write in my journal or nap in the sea breeze.

There are a couple of advantages to the big ships though.  Most of them have swimming pools, and some of them have whole amusement parks of activities—zip lines, carousels, water slides, climbing walls--that look like fun.  There's one ship that even has a planetarium, but looking at the night sky in the middle of the ocean has got to be even more thrilling.  It might be nice to take a cruise with spa treatments for deep relaxation.  Or a cruise with a political theme like the one The Nation magazine has every year.  So many options.

But between the childhood imprinting, the first moments that I saw of the Cameron movie, and the Carnival "poop cruise" nightmare, I am too scared to go on a ship where I would have to sleep overnight, or where we would be well out of sight of land for days at a time.  I know it is irrational, and maybe I will get beyond it someday.  I actually hope I do get beyond it, since so often I feel deeply called by the ocean and compelled to be out on the water.  Perhaps my seafaring ancestry will eventually demand to be answered.  But for right now I don't yet feel comfortable challenging my fears on this score, even though it looks like a wonderful experience.

Have you ever traveled a distance by ship that required overnight accommodations?  Maybe you have been all the way across the ocean on a ship?  If you've never taken a trip like that, do you want to?  Where would you go?

Have you ever been on a cruise?

DKos Asheville Meet Up News

by randalltfor DKos Asheville

The Asheville Kossacks had another successful meet-up with excellent food supplied and prepared by Gordon20024. There's excellent food pr0n in the diary, btw. Steelergrrl brought tomato plants to give away. randallt handed out large Register to Vote signs along with information handouts on the new North Carolina voting law and a comprehensive guide to obtaining an ID for voting. Asheville Kossacks have been setting the example of GOTV for the rest of us. Kossack cultjake told an informative story on his new work on the precinct level of politics. randallt also made Asheville Kossack nametag lanyards for everyone. I'm impressed with all the ideas he's thought of to Connect, unite and activate his group.

Los Angeles Kossacks -- Meetup and 33rd CD Politics,
Part I (WITH PHOTOS)

by Dave in Northridgefor Los Angeles Kossacks

On April 26, a number of us Los Angeles Kossacks assembled at Casey's Irish Pub in downtown Los Angeles for the first of THREE political events, each connected with the huge field of candidates running to replace Henry Waxman in the 33rd Congressional District, which covers the beach areas of Los Angeles from Malibu in the north to Palos Verdes in the south and swings inland to cover some of the more liberal bastions of the West Side. Our candidate today was David Kanuth, the youngest of the 18 candidates and, possibly significantly, the best fundraiser.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
