It’s election eve and I think one thing that commentators are missing (yet again) is the power and activism of women activists, candidates and voters. Moms like the Moms Demand volunteers in the photos above were the story of the 2018 election.
I’m pretty sure when all is said and done, they will be the story of the 2020 election, as well!!
This is a summary post of a series I did on 2020 State Legislative candidates in battleground states. You can read the first, kick off post here. I’m proud of this work and think the focus on State Legislatures will prove to have been a solid one. I profiled 9 candidates from Pennsylvania, 5 from Michigan, 6 from Wisconsin, 5 from North Carolina, 6 from Arizona, 5 from Texas and one each from Georgia and Florida.
Whew!
But, hey, it’s election day eve, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves!

First, as kos noted, click here for last-minute GOTV links!!
There’s impact you can make with phonebanking and texting, even on election day, and it just feels good! I did some calls with NextGen and it worked great.
Second, this will wrap out the activist part of my State Leg diary series. I’ll provide links to all of the diaries below, listed by state. After the election, I will also try to report out how these candidates did once we see some results. As a reminder my sort was always a mix of some of the strong candidates and also some worthy candidates running great races with a fighting chance.
2020 we had everything to win with redistricting and fighting the gerrymander in our sights.
We’ll know more soon!
I want to thank everyone who utilized my email opt-out ActBlue donation page. We raised $10,222 for 35 different local candidates from 112 grassroots small donors. You know who you are, and you should be proud and know you are appreciated!!
Between Dailykos, SisterDistrict, the NDRC and the DLCC many millions were raised for hundreds of amazing Democratic candidates this cycle. That’s the fundraising that will support current and future State Legislative majorities for Democrats. With a 6-3 Supreme Court, winning in the states is a crucial lever of power. We’ve left it all on the field this year, let’s hope we flip some state houses!
Finally, please take a look at two useful links that you can use on election day.
- As I wrote in a previous diary, there’s a tool called What’s on the Ballot which is the work of journalist, and U of Chicago Phd., Daniel Nichanian, or @Taniel on Twitter, founder and editorial director of The Appeal political report.
He’s updated the pdf to make it easier to and I will definitely be referencing it on election night!
- I’ve created a Twitter list of more than 140 great State Leg candidates (many more than I could have written about in this series) and this list is a fantastic way to track and follow how these candidates are doing and any issues arising with their campaign. I wish that this list had taken off more as a tool for supporting these candidates, I think we could have all made an impact...and for free! But it will also be a great election night tracker for anyone following the races we need to win to gain majorities in state houses in crucial states.
Finally, you can read more about this series and track these candidates and states below on election night. This list might still be very useful if you have a relative voting last minute in one of these states! This isn’t all the great candidates this year by any stretch, just a selection that I was able to diary about:
Pennsylvania:
Michigan:
Wisconsin:
North Carolina:
Arizona:
Texas:
Georgia and Florida:
About this series:
I’m a longtime local election activist and Dailykos blogger dating back to 2003. I was part of helping local blogs and the netroots drive Democrats to take back the House in 2006 and helped build some of the biggest and most successful grassroots and online groups supporting Barack Obama.
The 2020 Democratic State Legislative candidates are heroes, and deserve our support. (If you are on Twitter please click on that link!) They are our best chance of changing US politics including GOP voter suppression and gerrymandering for decades to come and many of them will run campaigns that help us win electoral college votes and key US Senate and House votes:
