Welcome back to the odd and whimsical poetery of the Peeps related to holidaze! Let’s investigate what today is, because we need all the holidaze we can celebrate, right?
Lately, every day seems to be many holidays! So I will pick out a couple, and you can click the link above if you’re curious about the rest. This is an open thread, so please feel free to add your favorite pomes and photoes for today in the Comments!
Today is Equal Pay Day
Women have made progress! Of course, given the current state of American affairs, heaven only knows if we’ll keep it.
Equal Pay Day, also known as All Women's Equal Pay Day and National Pay Inequality Awareness Day, is being observed today! [This is the day when, on average in the US, women have made the same amount since January of the previous year as men made by December 31 last year.] It was observed on April 11th in 1996. It was observed on April 11th in 1997. It was observed on April 3rd in 1998.... It was observed on May 11th in 2000. It was observed on April 3rd in 2001. It was observed on April 16th in 2002.... It was observed on April 28th in 2009.... It was observed on April 4th in 2017. It was observed on April 10th in 2018. It was observed on April 2nd in 2019. It was observed on March 31st in 2020.
You will, of course, work much later in the year to catch up if you are a minority.
I suspect that we made so much improvement over the past couple years because many states raised their minimum wage, and so many low-wage workers are women.

When we say we want gender equity
We mean we want the same opportunities
To grow and thrive, work hard and succeed
As men have. After all, we’re fifty-fifty
But within that fifty percent womanhood
There are many variations that get misunderstood
We all have identities on top of our gender
And some of those get supported better
Race, religion and nationality
Age, ability and sexuality
There is no one size fits all strategy
To empowering woman equitably
-snip-
Another place gender equity comes into play
Is our necessary focus on equal pay
We acknowledge when all women make the same staples
As men did last year - it’s usually in April
But this is a miss - it’s not indicative of dollars
That take longer to attain for Women of Color
Black women don’t catch up until later in the summer
And Latina women take all the way to November
Equal pay is crucial to workplace equity
So let’s make sure we’re looking at it granularly
Historically white women are first to see progress
We can’t relax until no women see any less
-snip-
To break down the 50 percent into stories
And understand women in all of their glory
But the hard work is worth it, without a doubt
We have too much untapped talent just waiting to come out.

Today is National Farm Workers Day
Especially now, thank your farm workers! This is the last day of National Farm Workers Awareness Week. Today is focused on growth. Where would we be without the food grown for us by farm workers, many of whom are migrants? Please click this link for actions to support farm workers.
God speed the plough
OfficeBSS has found a tuneful pome about farming! So please see her comment below for video and full lyrics. Meanwhilst, here’s the chorus (as I hear it):
I have lawns, I have bowers,
I have fields, I have flowers
And the lark is my daily alarmer
So jolly boys now here's Godspeed the plough
Long life and success to the farmer.
As far as I can tell, this is a traditional song of longstanding, with no known author. I’m sure if there is one, OB will find it! :-D
