Biden has a plan for saving the planet.
Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden proposed spending $2 trillion over four years on clean energy projects and ending carbon emissions from power plants by 2035.
is this just more of the same from Biden? Nope:
The plan marks a clear shift by Biden toward progressives' goals of urgently reducing fossil fuel consumption to combat climate change. Biden's new proposal is more ambitious than the 10-year, $1.7 trillion plan he'd offered during the Democratic primary, which included the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Once again, usually a candidate goes left to win the primary and then veers right before the general to win the general. Not Biden. He did what he needed to do to sell himself as the “safe” candidate for the nervous nellies and how he is showing just what he will really do as president
His proposed 100% clean electricity standard by 2035 is modeled after a proposal initially offered by Washington Gov. Jay Inslee and later embraced by Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren. The same aim was included in a series of recommendations recently negotiated by a task force made up of members appointed by Biden and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and co-chaired by New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a chief proponent of the Green New Deal.
What else will it do?
Along with the green economy plan, the campaign also released a plan specifically focused on environmental justice and combating the disproportional impacts of climate change on communities of color.
The campaign committed to targeting 40% of the benefits of its "clean energy revolution" to disadvantaged communities and will place a focus on addressing the connection between the impacts of climate change and public health, drawing on points from Biden’s plan to combat coronavirus and prepare for future global health threats.
How will he pay for it?
by undoing President Donald Trump's tax cuts, raising taxes on wealthy Americans and increasing the corporate tax rate to 28%.
this plan isn’t separate from his plan to save the economy, he is seeing all this as some huge “bigger than FDR” way to reshape and save the country as a whole
Biden's campaign said the plan would create union jobs in clean energy and through projects such as the construction of electric vehicle charging stations, the weatherization of millions of buildings, updating electric grids, expanding broadband internet access and more
and people are taking notice. From the Guardian: Joe Biden has endorsed the Green New Deal in all but name
Biden did something unprecedented for a Democratic candidate assured of nomination: he moved left…. the plans, which the Biden campaign described to reporters as “the legislation he goes up to [Capitol Hill] immediately to get done,” outline $2tn in investments in clean energy, jobs and infrastructure that would be carried out over the four years of his first term.… Part of Biden’s “Build Back Better” agenda, these plans are a Green New Deal in all but name.
and from Slate: Joe Biden Is Campaigning On The Green New Deal
“Basically, Joe Biden endorsed a Green New Deal in our view, substantively,” Julian Brave NoiseCat, the vice president of strategy and policy at the progressive polling and policy shop Data for Progress, told me. (His outfit was among the first to outline what a Green New Deal might actually look like, releasing a plan in September 2018.)...activists are still clearly happy with Biden’s leftward shift. The Sunrise Movement, the youth activist organization closely associated with the Green New Deal, issued an approving statement that took credit for teaching Joe Bide to “talk the talk” on climate, and promised to make him “walk the walk.”
This is another example of Biden doing the really smart combo of taking the bulk of an awesome progressive platform (so great things will be done) while avoiding the name (to not give the right-wing a yelling point).
Joe Biden will save the planet.
Joe Biden will be a great president.
