ICYMU: This Week in Gnuville
In case you missed us: Miss a Roundup? Need more Good News? Need respites from doom scrolling? Breaking the doomscrolling habit? New to Good News Roundups?
WineRev’s Good and Goofy Notes
Watch for WineRev’s G&G notes in the comments to see what others went through, struggled with, and surmounted in the past. His G&G comments are mini Good News Roundups. You can find all his comments here, even today’s, once he posts it. Tech Tip: You can search for >>> in Roundups to quickly find his comments.
WineRev, last Sunday:
Yes that hustling, bustling guy that just blew in the doors of the Gnuville Breakfast Brunch and Christmas Tree Shop is me. Yes, its heading toward my self-imposed 7-ish posting deadline but I’m dealing with a minor miracle. Being more of a night owl type of Circadian (sounds like a national group reasserting its cultural independence…….or at least someone circling near or about Canada: Circa…..) this morning routine, while routine, does get to me as “Early.” The last several months I have had two cats though, keeping me on schedule (Toby and Rascal, who is still with us; weak and skinny, but still here…...sniff!) because their tummies have THEIR schedule.
But today, the little paw on the face and the stare in the eyes from 2 inches away came at…..6:25! Whoa…..and yay! And…..both of them decided that if they had waited this long they were gonna make me earn it, so both took the finicky, “I want something ELSE, not THIS” approach, so only now are we here. Fortunately the staff and other Gnusies understand these things happen, and they and you are very kind to observe the “Writer on Deadline” plaque hanging over the battered Remington. The stock of carbon paper, eraser pencils and post-modern White Out all help, and your silent toasts with mugs of coffee, tea, mocha-cocoa and the glinting hoistings of the mimosa flutes are very helpful. So, any time now, you TOO can settle in with feet up, beverage at elbow, pixels a-flyin, Wi-Fi’s both Wy-ing AND Fy-ing, and read up on the News so carefully assembled by 2thanks. Yay! Then come your comments, replies, snarks as needed, cheers as needed, even sympathy as needed…..and those make the world go ‘round and the Good News Round Up always worth a visit. Thank you all!
Science
Sickle cell disease can lead to premature death and affects an estimated 100,000 people in the US, most of whom are Black.
Edward Helmore and agencies, The Guardian:
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved a pair of gene therapies for sickle cell disease, including the first treatment based on the breakthrough Crispr gene-editing technology, opening up two “transformative therapy” avenues for some patients.
✂
“Sickle cell disease is a rare, debilitating and life-threatening blood disorder with significant unmet need, and we are excited to advance the field especially for individuals whose lives have been severely disrupted by the disease by approving two cell-based gene therapies today,” said Nicole Verdun, director of the office of therapeutic products within the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a statement.
“Gene therapy holds the promise of delivering more targeted and effective treatments, especially for individuals with rare diseases where the current treatment options are limited,” Verdun added.
Please share good science news with us! (Especially JSWT, health, environment.)
A good place to look for science news if you are waiting for the Sunday Roundup is the archive of Overnight News Digest. On Saturdays, the OND always focuses on science, though not all of it is devoted to what I would call Good Science News.
Need more good news?
… arhpdx posted a list of good news sites toward the top of a recent Roundup, or you can find that same list in my comment: Good News Sources. Thank you, arhpdx and Mokurai!

Our map of Gnuville: 842 of us have shared our global locations!

You can use the map’s zoom arrows to resize the view and focus on your pin to find neighbors. Please note that the Google Map, though convenient to operate, is visually inaccurate because, among other issues, it enlarges North America and shrinks Africa [Maps present a distorted view of the world by kos].

Tech Talk for Kosacks
- Load-More Workaround: On a desktop or laptop, to banish the Daily Kos Load More buttons, click this link, which opens the main Daily Kos page and shuts off the Load More buttons at the same time. You must Reload any open Daily Kos pages. After that, you’re good to go, but you may need to come back here and click that link again in a few weeks. According to the DK Help Desk, the “Load More” option also resets the user back to the display of the old-style, React comments.
- Got a Daily Kos tech question? Let us know. No question is too basic.
- Solved a tech question recently? Please feel free to brag in the comments.

On Daily Kos:
We welcome comments in Roundups every day regarding:

- Good News Roundups and you.
- How are you resisting?

Our Roundup is almost open!
Thank you for fighting for truth and justice with all us Gnusies! 40% of our Readers don’t visit every day, 50% of us do, and 10% are here for the first time! We all do what we can. For 5 years, we’ve shared positive news, laughed, organized, resisted, rebelled, revolted without being revolting, relied, rested, mentored, created, crossed rivers, chewed our cud, puffed methane out both ends, and laughed. Here’s looking at you, kid, and standing upwind!
As always, please share more Good News than I can find or provide.
This is a group diary, and by my power I declare this Good Gnus Salo(o)n open! Let the good-news sharing and community building begin!
Power with, not power over ❤️ ✊ ❤️
