The GOP plan to kill Medicare
Did you know that the GOP has a proposed bill (AHCA) in the House purporting to “repeal and replace” Obamacare? Of course you did, you probably already know about the 26 million people who would lose insurance according to the Trump White House own numbers.
What you may NOT have heard yet is that this Republican House bill also aims a fatal blow at Medicare, the extremely popular program that is the only reason almost all older Americans have had healthcare for the past 50 years.
The death blow is simple, first cut off funding to the Medicare Trust Fund, watch it go bankrupt, then claim that we can’t afford it. The AHCA cuts Medicare funding to give a 0.9% tax cut to rich folks. Right now the Medicare Trust Fund is growing, but would go bankrupt by 2024 if this bill passes. Just about everyone (including the 38 million member AARP) knows that would be a disaster, except for the crazy right-wing Republican nutjobs in Congress, the flacks for the fatcat funded GOP think tanks, and the immensely rich assholes whose money is the reason the nutjobs and flacks have what they pretend are jobs.
Montana is a key battlefield in stopping this assault on Medicare
Speaking of immensely rich entitled idiots who buy Congressmen and hate Medicare, in Montana right now one has decided to cut out the middle man and buy a seat in Congress directly. New Jersey billionaire Greg Gianforte, who has previously spoken openly of his ideological opposition to Social Security and Medicare, is the official GOP nominee for the May 25th special election to Montana’s U.S. House seat.
Why is that important? Fear, confusion and division. Because if the GOP loses an open seat special election in Montana, they’ll realize that there is no such thing as a safe seat when you betray your constituents. When Paul Ryan goes to the well for votes, we want every GOP Congressmen thinking “if I vote for this I could lose my seat.” Montana is one of just a handful open seats where we have a chance to send that message in the near term.
But it’s Montana, can we really win? In a word, Yes.
Montana just elected a Democratic Governor, has a Democratic Senator, will likely run this special election entirely by mail, and really, really doesn’t like Gianforte. He just lost an election for Governor of Montana to a Democrat, and is wildly unpopular in the state as an obnoxious carpetbagger who is out of step with the state, but apparently his money was enough to buy a shot at the seat from GOP party insiders. Plus, this is a special election, and if there is one thing Trump has done, it’s fire up Democrats to turn out. All we have to do is run the right candidate, and give that candidate enough help to run a real race.
The good news? We’ve already got the right candidate, and most of Montana already knows who he is.
Rob Quist is a locally famous and internationally known Montana singer-songwriter whose campaign song promises he'll stand up for us if we stand by him.
He likes Medicare enough that he thinks everyone should have it. He’s officially endorsed by Daily Kos, and all the most prominent elected Democrats (Sen. Tester, Gov. Bullock, ex-Gov. Schweitzer, etc) in Montana. He’s already been to 40 counties on the campaign trail. He’s great on the issues, without the baggage of a long political career. Everybody knows him, and pretty much everybody likes him, even, maybe especially, a lot of folks who would normally vote GOP. Rob’s got everything, except millions of his own dollars to drop into a race for Congress against a carpetbagging billionaire. That’s where we come in:
