Biden has great, great plans for healthcare
Biden’s plans are more aggressive than they sound, featuring a Medicare-administered public option that, as Ella Nilsen explains, “would cover a range of people, including low-income Americans who are not eligible for Medicaid, and anyone who elects to choose the public option from the Affordable Care Act exchanges. Those who currently get health insurance from their employers would also be eligible.”
Biden’s health plan also features the extremely mundane-sounding idea of switching the ACA subsidy formula to be pegged to the price of a gold plan rather than a silver plan. This means, basically, extra money for every family earning less than 400 percent of the poverty line. (Biden has also pledged to lift the subsidy cap for people earning more than that.)
This is all a formally race-neutral agenda, but given the realities of American economic life, it amounts to not just a game changer for low-income households but a significant blow to the systemic economic gaps between Black and white Americans.
Boom!
Some other specifics of this Health care plan
- Medicare would directly negotiate the cost of prescription drug prices for all public and private purchasers.
- The age to enroll in Medicare would be lowered from 65 to 60, and older Americans could choose between their employer-provided health insurance, Medicare, or a public option.
Again for the people in the back, this does include a public option
It isn’t called “medicare for all” but it has some striking similarities
Private insurers need real competition to ensure they have incentive to provide affordable, quality coverage to every American. To achieve that objective, we will give all Americans the choice to select a high-quality, affordable public option through the Affordable Care Act marketplace.”
Not only that, but Biden’s public option will offer at least one plan without deductibles that is administered by Medicare and cover all primary care without co-pays. It will also negotiate with doctors and hospitals for costs for other treatments, much like Medicare.
If it looks like duck and quacks like duck…. it may not be a duck, but it is a damn good water fowl.
Biden's health care plan is designed to build on the strengths of the ACA and ensure that all Americans have access to healthcare that does not tie them to their employers.
It is an enormous step forward and Joe knows how to actually get it done, not just dream it.
Joe Biden will be a great president.
