Welp, it is Toosdai and so it is the day for some srs mischiefery with a mashery of Ogden Nashery (illustrated)! Let’s see what today is and if we have Ogden’s poetry to cover it… Googles… we do! For one of our topics, anyway, and we’ll introduce some other whimsical poets also too! This post is an Open Thread, so please feel free to discuss and to post your favorite illustrated pomes in the Comments!
So tonight, we will again explore today’s holidays:
Today is National Make a Dog’s Day
Of course this holiday had to be front and center. From this link:
Of course, adoption is just one way to make a dog’s day. If your favorite canine companion could talk, they might tell us going for an extra-long walk would make their day. When was the last time you visited the dog park? Of course, a new chew toy might top their list. Sometimes, they just want to play. Throw the ball already! Another thing that tops the list of fur babies everywhere – don’t stop scratching that itch.
a little dog that wags his tail
by Emily Dickinson
A little Dog that wags his tail
And knows no other joy
Of such a little Dog am I
Reminded by a Boy
Who gambols all the living Day
Without an earthly cause
Because he is a little Boy
I honestly suppose –
The Cat that in the Corner dwells
Her martial Day forgot
The Mouse but a Tradition now
Of her desireless Lot
Another class remind me
Who neither please nor play
But not to make a ‘bit of noise’
Beseech each little Boy.
[This is from a web page on BookRiot, “The 18 Best Dog Poems for Every Wag-Worthy Occasion,” suggest you read them all when you have time!]
Today is National Color Day
National Color Day focuses on the affect color has on each of us. The observance takes place each year on October 22. Color is powerful. It can affect a mood, draw attention, even cause alarm. It is hard to imagine the world without color.
when the devil was sick could he prove it?
by Ogden Nash
Few things are duller
Than feeling unspecifically off-color.
Yes, you feel like the fulfillment of a dismal prophecy.
And you don’t feel either exercisey or officey.
But still you can’t produce a red throat or a white tongue or uneasy respiration or any kind of a symptom,
And it is very embarrassing that whoever was suppose to be passing out the symptoms skymptom.
Because whatever is the matter with you, you can’t spot it
But whatever it is, you’ve got it.
But the question is how to prove it.
And you suck for hours on the mercury of the thermometer you finally sent out for and you can’t move it.
And your entire system may be pneumococci’d or streptococci’d,
But the looks you get from your loved ones are simply skepticocci’d.
And Conscience, that thin-lipped prude, raises her vaunted haunted to-do.
Crying there’s nothing the matter with you, you’re just trying to get out of doing something you never wanted to do;
So you finger your pulse before Conscience can jeer at you for a gingerer,
And you begin to believe that perhaps she is right, perhaps you are nothing but a hypochondriacal old malingerer.
And you take a farewell look at the thermometer.
And that’s when you hurl the bombeter.
Yes sir, it’s as good as a tonic.
Because you’ve got as pretty a ninety-nine point one as you’d wish to see in a month of bubonic.
Some people hold out for a hundred or more before they collapse
But that leaves too many gaps;
As for me,
I can get a very smug Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday or Friday out of a tenth of a degree.
It is to this trait that I am a debtor
For the happy fact that on weekends I generally feel better.
Today is National Nut Day
This day is NOT about the neighbor that lives down the street or the crazy co-worker. It is a food holiday celebrating a healthy and nutritious snack.
[Darn. We were all about to make that joke, weren’t we?]
if you weren’t such a nut meg
by Mike Gentile
She had so many chances
Yes she kept muffin it up
Butter intentions were good
Just not much coffee in her cup.
Couldn’t make a good decision
Too much walling back and forth
Always peppered with doubt
Should she head south, no maybe north.
Still, she was fun at a party
I would say, hummus a tune
She’d say, Icing because I’m happy
As the words began to croon.
Maybe that’s what’s most important
Omelet her off the hook
So she’s always in a pickle
Doesn’t do things by the book.
Once again, I’m gonna help her
Since she’s such a good egg
I said, girl you’d go much farther
If you weren’t such a nut Meg.

[Unfortunately we could not find out much about the author. We’re pretty sure he’s not the soccer player.]
