Welp, it is Toosdai and so it is the day for some srs mischiefery with a mashery of Ogden Nashery (illustrated)! Let’s see what today is and if we otherwise have Ogden’s words to cover it… it is a heavy food day, so of course we do! There’s even an entire Ogden Nash book on the topic. But there are specifics he doesn’t cover, so we’ll also introduce other whimsical poets! This post is an Open Thread, so please feel free to discuss and to post your favorite illustrated pomes in the Comments!
I think I used part of this pome before, so I will use another part tonight:
by Ogden Nash
Some singers sing of ladies' eyes,
And some of ladies lips,
Refined ones praise their ladylike ways,
And course ones hymn their hips.
The Oxford Book of English Verse
Is lush with lyrics tender;
A poet, I guess, is more or less
Preoccupied with gender.
Yet I, though custom call me crude,
Prefer to sing in praise of food.
Food,
Yes, food,
Just any old kind of food.
Pheasant is pleasant, of course,
And terrapin, too, is tasty,
Lobster I freely endorse,
In pate or patty or pasty.
But there's nothing the matter with butter,
And nothing the matter with jam,
And the warmest greetings I utter
To the ham and the yam and the clam.
For they're food,
All food,
And I think very fondly of food.
Through I'm broody at times
When bothered by rhymes,
I brood
On food.
More specifically, today’s holidays include:
Today is National Chicken Soup for the Soul Day
“National Chicken Soup for the Soul Day celebrates who you are and how you got there.”
It’s almost worth signing up for their email — “Get chickens in your in-bawks!”
How about a fun video song (it rhymes!) for this one? (It’s Jewish chicken soup, but we can all relate!)
And Today is National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day
[Wow, that’s a mouthful — in more ways than one, heh!]

Forget the onion and all its layers
thats obvious
You are undeserving for such a cliché
So I invite a different perspective
Think of a base, flour and egg kneaded together like I need you,
so dense in identical morals
Folded with mirrored ideology of future fortuity
Dipped sensually with a sauce so thick,
Thicker than blood or water,
Blended as one to create a sea of red as deep as our hearts pumping vitality
Sprinkled softly with the most palatable, mouth watering mozzarella
Each placing full of utter affection,
Long lost stares while you sit innocent to me feasting my eyes upon your moreish persona.
The only quandry we must face is whose decision that day of toppings to showcase
Who gets the chance to tease additional flavours, delicious tasters
To open eyes to attributes unseen before,
Hopes set high to electrify taste buds
Wanting the other to crave more
Ingredients brought together for a flavoursome pizza
You are my hawaiian
As i,
Your meatfeast.
Opposing trimmings
Eachothers 1st choice
One anothers perfection to quench their dying hunger
[Please note: Onions and garlic are not good for pets;
the puppy is holding a plastic toy!]
Author’s Note (also centered):
The analogy I concocted best used to describe my relationship.
My partner and I have opposite interests, humour, and past times,
but we sit firmly in a body of identical morals, integrity and honour, mirroring each others.
A pizza is nothing without a strong base.
Toppings can be changed and mixed to any combination.
The base is the structure of our love, ***** and rigid.
The toppings are interchangeable extras that we diversify daily to develop and grow together.
[Unfortunately nothing more could be learned about the author; a Google search returned many entries for e.e. cummings!]
And finally, Today is National French Dip Day
[The one pome I found about French dip was way too serious. But here’s a nice one about our current season and, amongst other things, meat.]
by Victor Buhagiar
Autumn and bygone memories,
bare cornfields, luscious heaths,
where tracks zigzag to vales
as hikers' joy blooms.
The green ferns thrive
from recent downpours;
goats graze before the winter blasts
and hay-laden carts amble by.
Here and there old farms dot
the countryside, smoke silently
curling slowly out of blackened chimneys.
Rambling around, gardens greet us,
faint scents permeate the air.
Late sunflowers start to hang their heads,
crinkled celosia "cristata" adorn haughty patches,
while blue Agapanthus demand queen reign.
In wooded areas once green, all color mutate:
ash turns to yellow, maple delights in red,
while dogwood almost precious pink.
Eventide approaches, many haste for meals,
a homely vegetable broth, a crusty bread,
cheeses of all types, and roasted lamb and meat.
Fully satiated, all repair for a goodnight's sleep,
in barns, tents or beds provided for comely spouses.
Oh would that autumn never ends.
[I couldn’t find out more about this author either; there is an author of the same name who has written a book about architecture; I suspect they are the same, but I am not sure.]
