We hear a lot of negatives about Biden’s advanced age, but there is a wisdom that comes from living a long time and Biden has that. Part of that wisdom is not getting worked up about the small errors and mistakes we all make.
One of the things that Joe had to work on as Obama’s VP was not always speaking off the cuff like he normally would. It was Obama’s White House and he had to keep in mind that the narrative was Obama’s to control. He tried really hard and mostly succeeded… although he didn’t always manage.
One time when he failed was during the swine flu. Biden was on the Today show and and instead of saying the calming things that the WH wanted him to say, he said “ I would tell members of my family — and I have — I wouldn’t go anywhere in confined places now.”
The travel industry blew a gasket.
The people working in Biden’s office were sent into a full panic.
Later that day, talking to his policy and communications advisor, Herbie Ziskend, Biden threw his arm around him (or course he did) and said “Are we winning today?”
”I don’t know about today, sir” said Ziskend nervously.
“You’re right. We are not,” Biden said.
It gave Ziskend some needed perspective. “He was being funny,” Ziskend later said. “ But he was also showing me, that, well, he had many days. He’d been doing this for 36 years. It is a lesson to all the people who were running around like headless chickens — this is one day, and there are going to be many, many more.”
This kind of wisdom (that comes with age) lets Biden move on from the bad moments with increased wisdom and grace. Instead of perseverating on every small thing, Biden is able to focus on the real work that has to be done.
As President, Biden will know to move past the tough moments and get to work. He will also know not to get cocky because of every good moment. That is the wisdom that a long career, age, and a wise disposition will bring. That is the wisdom of Joe Biden.
Joe Biden will be a great president
