Joe Biden has three things that will make him great at foreign policy. First, he has a lot of experience in that area (which we have talked about before). He knows the world better than almost anyone else alive. He has decades of experience.
Second, he is great at forming relationships (which we have also talked about). Biden forms relationships with foreign leaders. He knows all the birthdays, big events, and grandkids’ names.
But his no malarkey policy will also help with foreign policy. It already has.
Biden says what needs to be said when a leader is doing something wrong. Not only is Biden not afraid to stand up for human rights and against totalitarian leadership, he relishes doing so.
In 2010, Biden was in Israel and while he was there, Netanyahu announced 1600 new settlements. Biden blasted the move in public statements he argued that it “undermines the trust we need right now.” He was even firmer than that in private. It made a difference.
In 2011, Biden met with Putin in his Kremlin office. Putin was proud of all his nice furniture and told Biden, through an interpreter “It is amazing what capitalism will do, isn’t it!” Biden moved closer to Putin so that they were face to face and said “Mr Prime Minister, I’m looking into your eyes, and I don’t think you have a soul.”
In 1993, he met with Milošević and told him, “I think you’re a damn war criminal and you should be tried as one."
Biden will build relationships with foreign leaders and he knows the world better than almost anyone. But he also says what needs to be said — regardless of who he needs to say it to.
Joe Biden will be a great president.
