Welp, it is Toosdai and so it is the day for some srs mischiefery with a mashery of Ogden Nashery (illustrated)! Let’s see what today is and if we have Ogden’s words to cover it… we do! We also chose a couple new (to me) whimsical poets! But this post is an Open Thread, so please feel free to discuss and to post your favorite illustrated pomes in the Comments also too!

Today is, of course, Christmas Eve!

the boy who laughed at santa claus

[We have visited this pome before, but never in so much the appropriate season. I won’t post the whole thing, but some of the most precious bits IMHO. Please feel free to click the link for the whole.]

In Baltimore there lived a boy.
He wasn't anybody's joy.
Although his name was Jabez Dawes,
His character was full of flaws.

Like whooping cough, from child to child,
He sped to spread the rumor wild:
'Sure as my name is Jabez Dawes
There isn't any Santa Claus!'
Slunk like a weasel of a marten

Weasel or marten? Either way, pretty slinky!

Through nursery and kindergarten,
Whispering low to every tot,
'There isn't any, no there's not!’

What was beheld by Jabez Dawes?
The fireplace full of Santa Claus!
Then Jabez fell upon his knees
With cries of 'Don't,' and 'Pretty Please.'
He howled, 'I don't know where you read it,
But anyhow, I never said it!'

“Santa coming here thru dat?? I don’t fink so!!”

'Jabez' replied the angry saint,
'It isn't I, it's you that ain't.
Although there is a Santa Claus,
There isn't any Jabez Dawes!'….

Today is Also Last-Minute Shoppers’ Day

Celebrate the day going out and purchasing any last-minute gifts or other items you need before Christmas. Perhaps you didn't start your holiday shopping at all yet and need to celebrate Last-Minute Shopper's Day to the fullest. Or, maybe you did almost all of your shopping already but just need to pick up a thing or two. There is no need to be embarrassed that there are still things to buy. Today's holiday makes it perfectly acceptable. So get on out there while the minutes tick down!

'Twas the eve before Christmas.
I left it too late.
The shelves are all bare.
Oh, why did I wait?

I swore I'd shop early,
I clearly remember,
And be done with it all
By the first of December.

And Today is National Eggnog Day

Celebrate the day by having some eggnog! Buy some at the store or make your own. If you are looking for an alcohol filled version, you could make legendary jazz musician Charles Mingus' recipe. An eggnog cocktail called Tom and Jerry was invented in the 1820s, and is a popular traditional Christmas drink that could also be made.

[I checked the linked recipes. Basically, a booze-and-raw-eggs fest. Blah! YMMV.]
