Biden has spent almost his entire adult life in elected office. When he ran his first race in Delaware for Senator, he was considered a sacrificial candidate — running against a Republican who couldn’t be beat — but Biden won.
He won by meeting people and winning them over. Biden asked people for their votes but let them know that he respected whatever decision they made and was grateful that they were giving him the time to try to win them over.
Biden spoke to voters that way because he has always had deep respect for our democratic process.
This is Biden’s third run for president (this is the first time he got the democratic nod) but there were many times Biden was encouraged to run but didn’t do it.
Why didn’t he run when he was being told by his Democratic colleagues in the Senate that he could win?
Biden wrote:
you should not run for president because tactically you can win. The questions you have to ask are why you're running for president and what will you do when you are president. You shouldn't run until you know the answers to those questions.
Biden sees elected office as a sacred trust where you work to make people’s lives better. He strongly believes in democracy.
Why are the Republicans trying so hard to pin something on Biden via his remaining son (and failing)? Because Biden is genuinely clean. He has used his space in elected office to do what he was elected to do: help people in the ways that he thought were best. Biden has a deep faith in our democratic system and constitution. He wrote:
“For as long as I can remember, I've had a sort of romantic notion of what politics should be- and can be. If you do politics the right way, I believe, you can actually make people's lives better. And integrity is the minimum ante to get into the game. Nearly forty years after I first got involved, I remain captivated by the possibilities of politics and public service. In fact, I believe- as I know my grandpop did- that my chosen profession is a noble calling.
Biden believes in the democratic process and in the beauty of government of, by, and for the people. He will fight like hell for that now, after November 3rd, and after his inauguration as our 46th president.
Joe Biden will be a great president
